Very well done article. Sort of brings everything into focus. Been around the hobby for more years than I can remember. Have had several layouts in the past: Atlas sectional, but they worked. Recent purchases have been geared for DCC. I have sufficient space for a multi-deck layout. What I have been thinking about was a rather simple track plan with two switching districts. Prior to reading your article, I had already decided to have exposed staging on the lowest level with the old standby, Atlas top mounted switch machines.
I've had water issues in my basement. But, I'm finally getting close to having everything sealed up. I have contemplated using metal studs and pink board for the layout construction for a while now. Again, this article says I'm not crazy.
The one last feature I will add to the staging level is plexiglass between the studs and the wall: just in case I should pop a leak!
