Any recommendations for those on slow dialup?

Short answer: Try starting the download at bed time, and when you wake up the next morning, your magazine should be there waiting for you. Also consider using a download manager, since you can schedule downloads and restart them when they fail (more details in the long answer).

Long answer: The full rich media EMBEDDED Edition of Model Railroad Hobbyist issue 1 is 78 MB, which will be a 5+ hour download for people on dial up. While downloading a 70+ MB file on broadband is pretty fast (less than 10 minutes typically), on dialup it can be excruciating!

With a download manager, you can schedule the download to take place over night, and if it dies part way through, you can resume it where it left off!

Here's our list of recommended FREE Download Managers:

PCs: FreeDownloadManager

MACs: FOLX

LINUX: DownThemAll (Firefox Plugin)

This last download manager - DownThemAll - is a free Firefox plugin that runs on any computer that can run the Firefox browser.

By using one of these download managers on dialup, you can start the download when you go to bed and get up in the morning with your magazine ready to go! If the download died, just fire it up again where it left off before you go to work and when you come home the rest of your download should have finished and you're all set.

Using one of these download managers is a lifesaver for large file downloads on a dial up internet connection - and they're rather handy even on broadband!
