I've started working on the main smelter yard again after a long break.  I was soldering wires in preparation for adding power leads to the various yard tracks when my daughter walked in, looked at what I was doing and asked if she could try soldering.  After a quick tutorial ("Don't touch the hot end!") she was off.  She said she was going to be doing some soldering in a class at school so perhaps I can draft her as a helper when she needs to do her homework.

I hate to be a Safety Grinch

but I'd sure be happier to see those kids wearing safety glasses.

But good on you for giving them the skill!

Great job

You are winning at being a great parent.

David - no such thing as a Safety Grinch. You are correct in trying to improve safety in any hobby area. Safety glasses, ties back long hair and safe soldering iron holders are lessons most of our peers could learn as well as these bright kids.

Interest

It is Great to see children getting into the hobby, AND the fact they want to learn. I had my 3 year old nephew over last week, and he wanted to learn how to put down grass on my railroad ( he has already learned how to use my DCC wireless throttle ). After very little instruction, he picked it up very well, and had a big old grin on his face the whole time.

Get them young, don't be afraid to let them try things, and thoroughly enjoy teaching them and watching them learn. THAT'S how the hobby grows...and it does my heart good also ! My grin was easily as big as his was !
