Modifications to Walthers 110 foot DCC turntable
Photo of manufacturer’s box showing concrete pit:
My initial modification of filling in pit with sand, coal clinkers, oil spills, etc.
Brown ballast
I'm looking for a HO brown ballast that isn't made from tree nuts (LOL!) Unfortunately, Arizona Rock & Mineral doesn't make a ballast in WS brown ballast color. Are there any other choices?
Scratch Building a Coal Mine!
Old coal mine no longer fits into the scene on the new layout. It was hacked up a bit and scratch built something new and AWESOME. Some issues were fixed and eventually placed on the layout.
This is a Neat scratch-built coal mine scene!
Paint is Paint is Paint
For my next “plastic” structure kit, I was looking at using rattle can brands like Krylon for a base color.
Besides choosing a formula that is safe for plastic, are there any other recommendations and/or “warnings” on using this type of paint for models? Is the consistency of the paint “thicker” than paint designed for models?

Cat out of the Bag
I wonder if there is something Mountain Goat Greg aka Gregory Baker would like to tell the community ?? Hmm??

Surf, Sand, and Inspiration
Here's an interesting project from a different hobby, showing a different technique to make a beach, color water and model surf. Not radically different, but different enough that it may inspire someone's creativity.
I particularly like the use of LED's under the water to add movement. Used sparingly, this could be very effective.

Candy tuft.
Hello!
I have read with great interest (as usual!) my MRH, and I have a question.
Can someone tell me the botanical (latin) name of that so-called "candytuft" or "sesame weed"? I tried to find it by myself, but this time Google was NOT my friend, alas...

How to make powerplant look larger and coal piles more extensive,...via backdrop?
I have the Walthers powerplant set against the backwall of my layout and I am hoping to make it look like I have at least one other identical one in line with it,...maybe 2 more,...projecting into the wall. I'd like to have duplicate coal piles as well.
Found good way to make styrene buildings with lots of windows
This an almost finished version of the Coolidge Hotel in White River Junction VT. I would never have tried this had I not found an DVD entitled "Scratchbuilding Styrene Industrial Buildings." It is sold by the SER Region of the NMRA. This technique enables the modeler to make many openings easily -- no cutting out openings. All the corners are square and the openings the same size. Still a H--- of a job. I have tried to make the windows on a gradient -- light in front to dark at back. One window is wrong.
Highland Railroad Layout Tour
Hey everyone! You asked so here it is! A layout tour! Totally unscripted, unrehearsed, and shot with my iPhone so it looks totally professional!
Seriously though, I’ve been wanted to do one of these for a while and finally got a chance to do it. There’s not much to see as far as scenery, but you get a good idea of how to fit a good amount of track in a small space without it looking like spaghetti. Plus it’s possible to do without having a finished room to put it in (although I wish I did!). Hope you enjoy it!
