Dirt Roads

don_csx's picture

Hello guys. I have been redoing some scenery on my layout and I was looking for suggestion on dirt roads. What do you guys use. I have been think about using sifted sand. Start with a very fine sand the step up to a medium coarse sand for the center and the edges of the road and then to a coarse for the very edges.

Anyone have any other suggestion?

I used brick paver sand for the dirt/gravel roads in these pictures.

And this is the prototype I used as a reference for colour.

You nailed it brother! Love that color.

It is basically a stand in as is, as I will later cover it with fine dirt and colour it with this colour.

I can almost taste the dirt I would be kicking up on that road of yours.

Dirt Roads

Hi, I've been using Luke Towen's method for dirt roads. WORKS REAL WELL. Also, I've using dirt from Express Scale. The dirt is real and comes in 2 sizes - Fine and Medium. Hope this helps

Tile Grout as well

I'm with Steve & DaveInTheHat, I've been using Luke Towan's methods as well. Basic road with latex paint, followed by sand/dirt mix, sprinkle of ballast along the edges and middle. Finally the magic dust of tile grout and some Woodland Scenics green grass and weeds.

I use grout in my mix as well. I recently learned that grout dust is highly carcinogenic; I haven't worn my mask properly in the past and have got my lungs and throat irritated by it so be careful. I think one can get grout already mixed in a paste form and I'm looking into it.
