O scale - Updating some Atlas/Roco cars

SJVRR's picture

Hello all,

I've some old rolling stock from Roco (1970's production for Atlas) at home and I would like to modify them to obtain updated cars for my little project of US layout.

They are good bases. I've compared an actual Atlas boxcar with a 70's one: the body is exactly the same: I was surprised!

"I don't know if I'll find some space on my layout to make structures for the "from cow to the meat in the dish" processus.

Of course, I'll try to make a stock pen"

Yeah, there were small pens and loading ramps along the tracks in livestock country in the old days. They don't need to be very big or fancy as the cattle loading was not an everyday thing. Along the SP the pens were usually whitewashed so stood out from a distance.  Here's an old wooden stock car I had on my O scale layout. It was built from a kit and not as well detailed as your Atlas cars but it had a nice wooden patina.....DaveB

Hi Jack , IIRC that was a Westbrook car built from an old kit . I'd like to find a couple of  similar cars for my S scale layout. ......DaveB

Thank you DaveB,

DaveB, I keep this photo as an example to make a wooden stock car like this one using styrene and wooden strips.

I need to have different models of stock cars. Your ATSF model looks very old but suitable with my shortline company roster of the early 60's.

Another Boxcar

The last year, I've found a Roco boxcar painted and lettered for the Southern.

I've upgraded this nice model: grab iron, stirrup, couplers, uncoupler levers, wheels and air hose (hand made from wire and paper). And a weathering using "south" colors.

One more car ready for my future layout!

My first stock car

I've took some time to modify my first stock car lettering. The yellow panel was too big (see upper in this thread). I would like to keep the yellow panel. Now, I think it's better.
