Too me track work and Ballest sets the whole RR. I use fine on HO because it looks better. I would like to say that was my idea but after seeing it on several outstanding layouts that made up my mind.
for all your comments and suggestions. I am currently removing the over size ballast with an Xacto one tie at a time. it is a little time consuming and tedious, but I am making progress. I am glad I only did about 18 inches on two tracks! I will get more photos posted when it is cleaned up and ready for paint on the rails and ties. I am planning to use the Woodland paint pens for the process. Does anyone have tips and suggestions on using them/
I'll be doing just this with the #50 Scenic Express ballast Rob mentioned in the next couple weeks. I've already painted the rail with the paint pens. Like Rob says, look at some prototype photos. Using the paint pens over top of each other (after thorough drying and curing time) can vary the look enough, but play around with it. I have to paint the ties next and then I'm ready for ballast.
Once you've ballasted, then some weathering is in order. Joe's video from Model Trains Video shows all these steps, including the weathering, very well. I think you can download just that part for a few dollars, or buy the whole set - its worth it. Good luck and hopefully I'll be sharing my photos in my blog and we can compare notes.
