Just another Scale Modeler Ron Pare

I rarely ever break out of my comfort zone of wood kits. As I was packing/moving my shop to the new studio I found a few boxed treasures sitting on my "other stuff" shelf.

These plastic kits are fun but do have some tricky needs. For instance, there is not an easy way to decorate these kits in the way that I am used too. All the products and materials I use for wood kits are useless without priming in some way or another. And I find that remarkable as with a little texture made in the manufacturing process could, in theory, make these plastic kits just as paintable as a wood kit. Maybe I am wrong, I often am...

Painting Plastic

Not sure what you're asking here as plastic is generally just as paintable if a good primer is used. Krylon makes some great spray paints that are for plastics.

I built this kit and have both weathered it using powders as well as using rubber cement to mask areas and then painting over to make it look like weathered and distressed wood.  The sides of the building was painted using inexpensive craft store paint, although I did have to use several coats to get the coverage and level of weathering I was looking for.  My only complaint about this kit in particular is that the roof supports were inadequate given the size of the roof and trying to join two pieces of styrene or plastic together with not enough support.

Picked up a good tip

Hi Ron,

I picked up a great tip about the acrylic paint not wanting to hold on to styrene alone and using a “plastic stable” primer coat first. I just put it into practice on a scratch build I have going and it helped a lot. Keep up the great work.

Thanks for the comment.

I'll work more on detailing this kit later in the month. Much more to do on the scene.
