This week I'm looking at painting static grass - useful for when it just doesn't look right.

A job for the "little Kathy's"

How else will you paint those fine little strands of grass?

Mini Kathys

Good luck getting the mini Kathys to do real work.  They're turning into right prima donnas with all the screen time.  They'll be wanting their own show next!

Seriously, thanks for the comments!

Flow Improver

Hi Kathy,

Could you tell us what the "Flow improver" is?

Flow Improver

It's a Vallejo product, for airbrushes, that complements their thinner.

The blurb says:

Vallejo’s airbrush flow improver is designed to be added to paint at a ratio of 1-2 drops of flow improver per 10 drops of paint; simply add it to the cup and very gently bubble some air back to mix it. The medium reduces tip drying on the needle and improves the flow of paint through the airbrush.

That basically means that the paint takes longer to dry so is less likely to clog on your tip.  That used to be a major problem for me.

If you have no problem airbrushing with your current set up then stay as you are but if you find your tip gets clogged then try this.  It does mean you need to leave longer between coats though.

Hope that explained it.

Thanks

Thanks for that explanation Kathy.

I tried to use something called "Flow aid" from Liquidtex a year or so ago........it felt and smelled like soap........it actually caused so many problems with my paint job I was trying to do I ended up soda blasting the items being painted and started all over again.

One Question Kathy

I noticed in the video that you mix your paint right in the airbrush.  Any particular reason?  Just my thoughts but it would seem that mixing it in a small separate jar would yield a more consistent mix.  Other than that, great video.  Never thought about painting my grass so I'm gonna give it a go!

Thanks.

Mixing in airbrush

This is the way loads of modellers do it so I'm just copying I'm afraid.  I went to a clinic run by Pelle Soeborg and he did it this way and a light bulb came on.  I found you left so much in the bottles that it was a bit of a waste and they won't suck the very bottom out.

For small amounts, just mixing in the airbrush is less wasteful.
