Just another Scale Modeler Ron Pare

Photography is a tricky thing.

First, what type of camera you use demands different styles of operation. My friend Bob made a website with tips and tricks for digital and SLR/DSLR type cameras.

Bob has won many Model Railroader photography contests, with some of the most unique shots I have ever seen. Bob's style is to think outside the box. And I think you all will enjoy this website

Another suggestion

Thank you, Ron, for that link. Very good coverage for model photography.

In the subscriber bonus downloads for August 2011 there is a PDF (zipped) of the photography clinic given by Charlie Comstock (Bear Creek) - Model Railroad Photography - moving beyond snapshots (by Charlie Comstock) - PDF: 115 pgs/51 MB (PhotographyClinic-06.zip). There are many useful tips and discussions of methods for model railroad photography in that PDF.

IIRC this clinic was presented at the NMRA X2011 convention in Sacramento.

Photo Review - Catching Unseen Details and Problems

Even if you're not shooting for contest quality photos, I have found that taking simple photographs of a scene is a great way to show you the flaws in the scene and where you may need to add something. I'm always amazed that when I shoot a close-up photo of something I may think is relatively complete, a photo definitely shows where improvements can be made.  The small flaws may be in the ground cover or a corner of a building which is slightly off center and has a gap, but easier to see in the photo than when I'm actually doing the modeling.  I find photos to be an invaluable tool for checking if I have the scene the way I had originally intended for it to look.

Oh, look at Bob's . . .

. . . first recommendation: Read the manual! Now where have we heard that before here on MRH? I hope he hasn't offended anyone. ... Seriously, I recently wondered what had happened to Mr. Boudreau. I always enjoy his work.

Some great MR covers there, Ron!

There's some innovative photo ideas shown in the behind-the-scenes shots of the MR covers you linked that are simple to execute, yet very effective! There's also a lot you can do on a model layout using small lighting instruments such as flashlights. Lighting techniques for model layout photography would fall under the general category of "table-top photography," and would benefit from the same lighting techniques often used in food and product photography.

My personal site, lightbasics.com, mainly deals with traditional portraiture lighting using Nikon Speedlights and Elinchrom studio strobes; however, there's also a tutorial on light-quality that's applicable to any type of photography (click on my sig, then scroll down to "The Basics").
