Fast Tracks
For immediate release:

A spokesman for Fast Tracks announced today their intention to enter the final frontier in model railroad sound with a line of sound decoders for mainline track.

These decoders, called "GroundTraxx" will feature professionally recorded sound of mainline track on a typical quiet afternoon. "You know the sound track makes when you're trackside waiting for hours with not a train in sight? We want to capture that sound" Tim Warris of Fast Tracks said earlier today. Groundtraxx features 17-bit sound, making it one bit better than CD quality. "Every little bit helps when you are first out of the gate with a product like this, and we are aiming to be a bit better where possible." Warris said.

A typical decoder will feature 2 hours of looping silence.

Could this lead to flange squeal for curves or transponder controlled  moving loco sounds for N scale? ..DaveB

excellent idea !

I'd like to pre-order several of these to get the deafening silence of no trains to an increased level.

I'll forward a check once my Nigerian Prince sends me my fortune. I'm expecting it today.

Welded or not?

Makes a big difference. I see the picture shows tracks with tie plates. Modelers with welded track, which most of us know includes all flex track, need a different recording.

NICE!

I have been waiting 35 years for this!  Put me down for 8000 of them.

Finally a solution

Glad to see this much needed product on the market. I tried playing a recording of rail on my cassette player with the volume set to zero but it just didn't sound like the real thing. The 17 bit recording of the Groundtraxx will make all the difference in the world. I have long said 16 bits simply are not enough bits to accurately record silence.

Will the Groundtraxx be offered for different rail weights and tie types? My layout uses code 70, code 83, and code 100 rail on wooden ties. As you know, there is a big sound difference between the different rail weights. And the tie material adds a unique ambiance. I want my rail silence to be prototypical.

If a tree falls...

by the track and no train comes by, does it make a sound?

Well, friends... considering

Well, friends...

considering today date and this sentence on the original post :

"A typical decoder will feature 2 hours of looping silence." ..... The best to me is :"I want my rail silence to be prototypical."

Volume control

It has to go up to 11, Tim. Otherwise it just won't be state of the art. Oh, and will there be a No-Traks mode as well, to simulate the sound of an abandoned right of way?

Best news yet!

Thanks Tim!

I've been wanting something that truly illustrates my "Dead Rail" layout. The lack of sound will now be filled with the sound of dead rails!

Please consider a Bluetooth enabled version to run via my smartphone for those long stretches waiting for trains to emerge from staging or a helix. Since most of us have a smartphone this would be a natural extension of it's use and trackside experience through headphones - the silence would be deafening

I'm afraid Fast Tracks has missed a golden opportunity...

As usual it's a matter of under-engineering.  I'm holding out for a decoder that has its sound files coded in a manner directly connected to the size of rail you choose to use: 70-bit for code 70, 83-bit for code 83, etc.  You'd think that with their long experience with track fabrication tools able to deal with every rail size known to man they'd have gone the extra mile (meter?) to make this available.  They do, however, recognize the need to replace sound files with silence files...

"Sounds Of Silence"

Will it randomly play Paul Simon's song?

Now that is just something

Now that is just something very unique, the stealth sound module, (you can't hear it).

no sound

That means you will never have an issue with the decoder.

I love it!

This would go perfect with my moonless night / no lighting in the train room for that great evening.  I could turn on the sound(less) module, turn the lights off, sit in my totally black railroad room, and think about trains!!  WOO WOOO!

To jfornasar,

I am surprised to see your post. As far as I knew I did not have, any relatives on this forum, but being as you seam to be related to my relative the deceased Prince of Nigeria too, I guess we must be related somehow.  So when I have the family reunion thus summer remind me to invite you to visit.   I guess this should not be a surprise I have a very large family.  I just never knew it was that large!

Suprised? So am I...

Just great, another family branch to split the 20 million with. I'm still waiting for the courier to arrive. I hope I gave them my correct SS# and detailed bank information.

Not just Yet

A great idea yes, but I'm going to hold out for the obvious next incarnation when they incorporate "AromaTraxx" into the decoder.  May as well enjoy that sweet summer smell of creosote and grease while listening to the nothingness...

Era and Region Specific?

Nothing like the sound of 1970's Saskatchewan mainline on a blistering hot Prairie day.  Mountain rail silence just wouldn't be the same...

Appreciating Modeling In All Scales but majoring in HO!

Brilliant!

Is there a stomach-rumbling routine that kicks in about 20 minutes before the trains let loose in a frenzy of activity? That would sum up a lot of my railfanning experiences...run to grab a quick sandwich and miss the acttion!

Thanks Tim...I assume train detection is optional to actuate these things, as the trains aren't really needed...

Curious

about how this decoder will react to a short.  Will the loop start over, or pick up where it left off?  And does it include an 8-band equalizer?  I can't commit until I hear a full review, and I'll wait in silence until I do.
