Welcome to the Richlawn Railroad.  The Richlawn Railroad is a HO scale freelance layout set in the 60's & 70's in the Kentucky area and features the Louisville & Nashville railroad.  I grew up in St Matthews, Ky, a suburb of Louisville with the L&N tracks only 200ft from my house. As a kid I used to watch the F7's and U-Boats rumble down the track and have always be fasinated by trains.  Currently there is 101 ft of single mainline track, a freight yard area, a downtown (Hoovertown) area, and a mountain area.  Future plans call for a residential area and industrial area to allow for operations.  I am a member of the Piedmont Divison of the NMRA in the Atlanta, GA area.

Jeff,

Thank you!  The waterfall was done off the layout on a piece of 2" foam using Wood Scenics(tm) Water Effects following the instructions from their free on-line video.  You can check out details & pix on my blog at:  http://richlawnrailroad.blogspot.com/2009_06_01_archive.html

Brilliant!

Rick, I've actually only seen photos of a layout I've seen in person before a couple times, and the Richlawn is wonderfully photogenic!  Perhaps you could tell the readers about your 3-D backdrop in the scene behind the waterfall, and how you force the perspective in that direction.  In fact, the Richlawn RR would make a great article to discuss your original motivations, and how your focus has changed as your experience level increases, and how you plan to incorporate your learning into the future.  I'm glad so many other readers now have a chance to view how beautiful your scenery is.

Richlawn RR details - thank you, Paul!

Paul,

I appreciate your kind words.  I'll be glad to share any and all information about the concepts, construction, and future of my railroad.  I'm not a talented author, so my ramblings may be very unprofessional.  What do you think would be the best way to present the information?  Should I just blog it here, or submit articles (I've never done that).  Thanks!

Great Layout!

It sounds like there would be lots of interest for articles.  Check out the the Write For Us link and see what MRH is looking for.  Maybe you will find that an article is not out of the question after all.

Otherwise, do share your pictures, videos and ideas here on the forum too!

N scale vehicles in back?

Did you use N scale vehicles in the back up on that hill to force perspective?

Vehicles in the distance on the mountains

Chris,

I looked into using Z scale vehicles but found them to be very expensive and not that great.  Instead of using Z scale vehicles I went to Hobby Lobby and bought charms like people wear on charm braclets.  The tractor and pickup truck only cost me $1.23 each.  The charms come silver color, so I painted them.  I've included a couple of pictures of the truck.

The house is made from foam board with printed patterns for roof and sides.

Richlawn detail

Greg,

Thank you for your kind words about my layout.  I enjoy detailing and find that realistic scenery makes railroading more enjoyable.

Welcome

Hans,

Welcome to model railroading!  I appreciate your praise for my layout and actually started railroading by building structures before I had a layout.  After I had built a number of structures I figured I better have a railroad on which to put them.  Here is a picture of my first layout which was later incorporated into my existing railroad.  Rick

Thanks Rick

Thanks for sharing Rick. You've created some topnotch scenery there and I look forward to any information you have to share, be it here, in an articole or on your blog.

Richlawn Scenery - Ghost River comment

Ghost River,

Thank you.  I did do a "Scenery Scene" article which is scheduled to be published in the next edition of MRH.  I'm trying to do a better job at documenting what I do so that I can share with others.

Double take, at first glance

Double take, at first glance I thought wow he sure got a lot into that new layout and real fast to. Then I realized this was the old layout, and it was very nicely done.

Thanks, Gunfighter

I don't know if you mean version 1 of my layout which has ben dismantled or version 2 which is under construction.  I'm using a modified version of the H.O.G. layout for my latest layout that is in a 10ft x 12ft room.  I'm using the H.O.G. as a around-the-walls with the deepest section being 35" deep for scenery.  Here's a picture of the layout.  I don't live in Louisville any longer but do visit usually once a year.

i was talking about your newer layout

i am going to end up with only 2 sides against the wall so i was thinking of going 36" wide on the other 2 sides since i will have reach from both sides. i would like to work in a turntable and a slight grade.  i can go 15' long if i want to but i dont want to take on too much.
