I noticed the index that JL&T Jason created for his blog here on MRH and I thought I would do the same. It's a nifty idea.

My blog entries on MRH are a small subset of a much more detailed blog hosted at  http://www.lkorailroad.com. So if you want the full scoop or if you can't sleep and warm milk isn't doing the trick then please visit my site.

Bill,

If you do not know the blog exists how do you find the page you show? You have found what I have looked for many times - a list of a member's blog entries. How did you do that?

The Elusive Blog Link

It's located at the end of every Original Post (not comments).

I like to include links in my OP's to related blog entries, and I include the blog link in my Signature, so it's on every comment.

Cheers!

Duh

Well, that's not fair hiding it right in front of my face. Wet blanket received and deserved.

Signature updated

The signature entry is an excellent idea Bill. Updated mine.

Sorry Jas. Seems great minds, while they may think alike, apparently can't find links that are right there on the page in front of them!

I like the updates, even

I like the updates, even though they may be redundant. Many of you guys have great blogs on your layouts and I enjoy reading about them a great deal. I do not want this to go to your heads but the blog entries in many cases would be a featured article in one of the print mags, except they would not have the options to interact nor would they contain nearly as much detail.

Thanks for keeping things updated. Also Bill, instead of going back through a bunch of posts to find your blog for example or Alan's or another I should now be able to quickly go through a few pages of recent entries and find it easier than the search engines.

Again thanks for the blogs guys I really enjoy them.

Actually ...

... the whole thing is just not very intuitive.  Those who understand the system can navigate with ease, the rest of us just plug away until someone points out the "easy" way to do it.

Blog link

Bill

That is a great find.  I had seen that but never knew what it was for.

I quickly checked a few post including mine and apparently you have to start your initial post as a "blog" type rather than a "topic" for the link to show up.  I did mine as a topic because I didn't know any better and the link is not there.   Still a lot I have to learn about this internet stuff - hope I'm not too old of a dog.

I knew about the blog link too, but...

The reason why I added the index on the very first blog post was if you click on my "JL&T Blog" link (as highlighted by Bill) you get the first full page with 4 or 5 posts and then and index of 7 pages (down the bottom) worth of posts to find the rest. If the blog link only showed the heading and in a small font that would work because you would get most of the blog content on one page, but because the link provides the heading and a short snipet of the content and any pictures you only get the 4 or 5 posts and then the seven or so pages of index. The way I have done this someone who finds the original first post of our blog now has direct links to every post (when I add the rest) with a short discriptive heading. The other reason I changed it too was because the content in the original post was completely outdated and need refreshing too. So in affect it's still a valid thing to give other modellers a direct link to all of my posts from our blog, and all on one page.

MRH Blog tips

I didn't mean to suggest that it wasn't a valid effort, and you have certainly answered my question about how this approach is different.

Another tip for blog postings, if you don't like the summary view on the blog index page, you can uncheck the option from your posts...

Didn't take it that way at all Bill...

All good! Will have to have a play with that option, as I didn't know about that one. Seems to be a problem with having to drill down into the settings to find these allusive helpful things. With our index on the original blog post too, I have changed the wording of the headings too to make them a little more easier to reference to our blog. I've added some references to the areas, like the L&T Branch so that it makes it easier to find certain aspects of the build. Perhaps you can get a job after the next software forum update as the new "how too" guy for MRH Forum Posting? :D

It helps on searching if you

It helps on searching if you put your layout name in the post. I always try to include "Richlawn RR V2" in my subject line so that others can locate info about my railroad in a search.

Two Questions

I too am not very computer literate and have no idea how some of you do the Signature and now the blog link.

Could one of you guys that are doing this and are much more computer savvy as especially related to this site please explain in detail how you do these two things.

Thanks

Richard

Signature

Click on My Account in the right sidebar. Click on the Edit tab.

First, clear the password field so Drupal doesn't think you are trying to change your password.

In the signature field you can put anything you wish. To get a link from something on MRH like a blog post right click on the title and you will see something like Copy link address or copy target.  It varies with different browsers. Use the link on globe icon to assign a link to some text. I am assuming you are on a Windows PC. Apple guys will have to chime in to help you with Apple.

That's all there is to it.

Alan
