With the latest contest going on I was reminded to go have a closer look at this MRH sponsor.  After going through the website I found that not only is NANO OIL great for model trains it's also highly touted for use on firearms as well.

Anyone here use NANO OIL for their guns?

I think I'll get a bottle just to try, contest or no.

I've always used break free,

I've always used break free, but it could be worth a try depending on price.

Gun Oil

Going by many of the testimonials it is a fantastic product to use with firearms.

I'd be interested in hearing about any personal experiences in that regard.

Maybe I'll have to be the first here?

Got mine coming...

I just placed my order for a bottle of the 10 weight.

I have to try this product for myself.  After learning that Nano-Oil is compatible with all plastic or metal surfaces.  I figure it's worth a try.  Now I hope I win the contest so I can choose another weight of the oil to try.

Oil Weight

Kevin,

I have a feeling your going to try this on the crane swivel. Let me know if it makes a difference as I might buy a bottle if it works they way they say it's supposed to.

Crane Lube Too!

Yes, I thought I would try it on the crane.

I have tried a couple of dry lubes on the swivel with varying results, although they did both improve the rotation.  I am going to see how the Nano Lube compares to those.

I wish now that I had taken some video when I first got the crane and then with each lube so I could show you a comparison, but alas, hindsight is 20/20 you know.

When I started the crane was hard to turn with one finger and would really bind in two places.  Cleaning and smoothing with a fine emery file and then further polishing with 600 grit paper made a huge difference, to where the crane would rotate easily 360 degrees without binding at all.

Adding a dry teflon lube eased the rotation even more.  Switching to dry graphite with molybdenum improved things to the point where I could hold the chassis in one hand and flick the cab base and it would spin a few times.

I'll clean up the dry lube and try the Nano oil to see if there is any improvement.

I guess it's really off topic but I am also looking forward to trying the Nano Oil as a gun lube, lol!

Yes that's what happened to me too.  I really want to try the product so I ordered some up to try.  If I win a bottle I'm told I can choose the weight I want, which is very nice!

The free shipping is AWESOME!

Slippery When Wet, with Nano-Oil

My Nano-Oil order arrived in a timely fashion late last week.  This morning I had some time to go down to the hobby workshop and try it out on my Athearn Crane project.

I cleaned off the dry graphite with molybdenum that I had applied at first, then I applied a few small drops of Nano-Oil to the obvious bearing surfaces, with the included needle applicator.

I reassembled the two halves of the cab floor around the turret and gave it a spin to spread the oil around.

I could already tell the difference!

Now the cab floor turns effortlessly.  Holding the chassis up vertically, whichever way I tilt the chassis, the floor freely rotates with it, just from the weight of the floor.  Prior to using the Nano-Oil the cab floor would not rotate on it's own at all.

Thanks Nano-Oil!

I did a test last week.

I had one of the club's GP-30s disassembled for a sound install (early Proto2000 - Athearn knock off). So, for grins, I disassembled the entire drive train and ran it through the ultrasonic with a degreasing solution (50/50 isopropyl alcohol and water with about 10% Simple Green). I reassembled it with 10 weight Nano oil on all mating surfaces. Got it running and put a couple of drops of 85 weight on the worm gears. With the loco frame suspended on a vise, I can get the MOTOR to turn about 10 RPM for hours on end! This means the wheels are doing about 1 RPM. This powered with a MRC pulsed power pack. I'm sold!

really really off topic but...

Kevin what do you shoot? and let me know how the Nano-Oil works out

Hi,

Currently a Winchester model 94 and a Page Lewis falling block single shot .22, for plinking.  I'll let you know once I try the Nano-Oil for awhile.

Resurrected my shaver!

My old Norelco shaver reached the point where it wouldn't make it through a shave on batteries alone. I had to have it plugged in. And, at least in my model, the charger won't supply enough current for the motor, it still takes from the batteries. Today, we'd call it a "hybrid" design. So, I brushed accumulated hairs out of the cutters and dumped the cutters and their support frame into the ultrasonic cleaner with the cleaning solution I discussed in my January 2013 column http://model-railroad-hobbyist.com/magazine/mrh-2013-01-jan/di_dcc-sound. When it was clean and dry, I put a drop of Nano-Oil on each cutter. NEW SHAVER! It now runs several shaves on a charge and doesn't need to be plugged in just to make it through one!

Amazing

Guns, trains and electric razors all in one thread! And I thought some of the camping forums I belong to could cover a myriad of subjects in one go.

nano-oil conductivity

Anyone know if nano-oil conducts electricity? Can it be used on axle bearings that conduct power from the loco wheels? Earl P.

Oiling pickup transfer points =/= a good idea

Dear Earl,

If you have to resort to such measures, there is something clearly not-right with the loco's pickup config/state in the first place. Instead of adding factors (and problems) to the equation, suggest resolving the core issues first.
(recent posts have highlighted cleaning the bores of the sintered bearings as a simple-yet-key technique)

Nano-Oil is a lubricant. I use it to reduce friction.

If you need conductivity, I recommend Never-Stall. It is specifically designed as a conductive lubricant and corrosion inhibitor. It is packaged for Daylight Sales, but there are many dealers on the web. Search for "never-stall".

As the Winner of the Last Contest

I found that all of the armory and the numerous fishing reels have benefited in a very positive manner from the tube of 10w nano oil received.  The fishing reels especially loved the nano oil and are so much smoother than ever before in their lives.
