With the expansion of the railroad to occupy the whole room my layout is in, several things needed re-arranging. One of which was the Raven Pulp and Paper Mill. (More on that coming soon) The corner that was once staging under the old paper mill site was now an empty corner, so I decided to ad another industry as long as I was going to be replacing scenery. The result, O'Malley Tire Distrubutors.  Kitbashed from a Walthers Champion Packing Plant, It was converted to a shallow relief type structure and built to fit into the corner that was vacated when the Raven Pulp & Paper Mill was torn out and rearranged. This facility receives boxcar loads of tires and also can accomodate flatcars and gondolas loaded with heavy machinery tires for distribution throughout the Olympic Peninsula region.

The concrete loading dock was scratchbuilt from styrene. The lettering on the building was done with dry transfer lettering. The whole structure was weathered with weathering powders and an india ink wash. The two backdrop flats alongside are Kingmill Radical Flats products.

Beautiful, my friend!

Kevin,

As usual you did an outstanding job!  I especially like the weathering on the building dock roof........ and is that a dumpster I see on the dock?  Thanks for sharing!

Looks Good

I like how you used the smokestack in the corner, and added the extra dock to expand the scene.

TORN OUT!!!????!!!!

"when the Raven Pulp & Paper Mill was torn out and rearranged......"

WOW!!!    I know it came from another layout once already, that it will return in some form and the "new" industry looks stellar, but torn out, I don't know what to say.   I'm glad I  archived all the photos I cold when I did, it sure was nice something to look at............

Looking forward to the update thought.....

Nice work

Looks Great.

Second champion meat packing I have seen kit bashed this week. Your street picture is getting wide distribution, look for it anywhere in the future. Great idea for my last remaing corner of my layout.

Good Stuff!

Wonderful work as always, Kevin. The brick coloring is well done as is the tar paper roof overhang. Can I make one suggestion? The white on the window frames of O'Malley's seems a bit stark to my eye. The bricks, roof, and smoke stack show typical urban soot and grime (so do the windows on the neighboring buildings) but the window frames look freshly painted. A dusting of some gray chalks applied with a large make-up brush might do the trick and dull the frames. Hope you don't mind me chiming in, but with weathering as good as yours that was something that jumped out at me. Bill

New Industry in Port Andrew

More jobs in Port Andrew (for the train crews and the local population) - very good news!  With all the logging equipment that operates in the area, I can picture where those big tires are going.  Nice job, as always!

As spectacular as I thought the previous Raven Paper was, I can't wait to see the mill in its new location.

Great Scene

Great looking scene, Kevin. Is that loading dock against the building part of the Walthers kit or did you scratch build it? The colors and weathering on both docks look really nice.

Question

Hey Kevin,

Glad to read up on what is going on in your railroad-I was wondering though-since I like the looks of your engines, I was wondering how I could obtain one? I would like to have one if possible and have it as a power sharing unit on my layout once it goes from the stage its in now to running? I run 4 axle engines, if you would be interested in doing an engine for engine trade-later this year perhaps? I have an extra I can get done and send-if you care to do it that way?

Awesome

Good job on the new industry for your layout. Love your locomotive also. Looks like the real thing. Good luck with future additions to your layout!!

Thank you

Thanks to all for the kind words. I'm glad I seemed to be able to pull this one off fairly successfully. It was kind of an awkward spot on the layout, and with many of the areas on a smaller switching layout, I'm always feeling everything is a little cramped.

Steve: Yes, about 80% the original Raven Pulp & Paper was torn out. I had to do this to take advantage of the additional space I acquired, with the ability to have continuous running and increased staging capacity. The new mill is quite different and nearing the point of completion. Updates will be coming soon I hope.

Bill: Boy, you are right on the money! The window frames were put in after the walls were weathered and in fact didn't receive any weathering attention. And now that you pointed that out, it sticks out like a sore thumb. Look for an update. Thanks for some excellent constructive criticism!

Tom: Yes the concrete loading dock is a scratch build with an interesting origin. At work I was updating a lobby scale model a year or so ago of the Auburn Boeing plant where I work. The original model was built by a Seattle architectural firm years ago and they had made all the buildings out of resin blocks. After removing several of these on the model representing buildings that no longer exist. I got to looking at one of them and the height and because it was painted gray reminded me of a concrete platform, so I saved it from the garbage can. I was able to cut it to fit the area and CA some styrene around it to form the dock.

Nathan: I in fact love to trade decal sheets with other freelance modelers so rather than swap locos, a decal sheet swap with paint information would a great way to go. I am going to be ordering some more custom decals soon, so let me know if you'd like to do this. I know I owe a decal set to two folks already. On a similar note, below is one of the brand new locos that will be making appearances on the Washington Northern. It's my modeling friend Tyler Whitcomb's excellent Tenino Western N scale layout. He had painted an HO Atlas GP40 (he's tempting by HO since he will be moving to a new home soon). I purchased it and added his custom decals and details. It will run as run over or pool power on my layout since geographically they are in the same area of Washington state. It still needs a few TW specific details such as a weed plow and firecracker antenna and some weathering. You can see more of Tyler's excellent layout here. He's a great modeler.

As always Kevin

This is outstanding work.  I'd wait on the widow weathering until you see if the Tire Co. issues a press release about new, low-e windows that were installed with a ARRA grant.  Just sayin . . .

Loading Dock Function?

Your modeling is always spectacular with the new industry being no exception. But, why the ramp on the dock? It seems to be the ramp to nowhere. Government job?

Decals sheet

Hey Kevin,

Yes, that would work too.  I can get an extra couple made up-I plan of getting Jim paid off at the end of this month, as I sold some surplus engines...still have some to go, but this way I can get my decals done too.  As for the paint scheme on my engined-its an easy one for you-its the CSX YN3 scheme-dark blue with yellow ends

Say it Isn't So

Kevin,

First let me say I enjoyed the photos of the new industry. Always good to have something new and this will keep the WN crews busy.  Great job on that just like everything else on the layout.  80% of the paper mill is gone? Did this happen after I visited you last December? If so I'm glad I got to see it before the wrecking ball came in.  I still hope to use some of the ideas I saw with the Raven on my own paper mill. My mill is temporarily shut down, as the new owners come in and assess the business they bought. Actually I have been working on my mine area and just shifted my focus for a few months.  Hope to be back to Tacoma sometime later this year so maybe I can invite myself over again and get to see the new construction. And by the way, I wouldn't mind exchanging some decals when you get them made.

B&B Railways

Nathan,

I might be interested in doing an exchange with you. My fictitious road is the Kawartha Lakes Railway, which extends from Peterborough to North Bay. Looks like you have a similar approach with your pike, as we both can interchange at North Bay. Feel free to contact me off-list and we can discuss further.
