For some reason I haven't been able to stay logged in thsi morning. Every time I ask to be returned to the list of topics, I am asked to re-log in. What gives? THis isn't good for retention of interested people.

More Info

After the above reply, I clicked on Post Index and my signed in status disappeared from that screen.  I then did a back arrow to return and I'm signed in again.

Tried a different path

Ok, after the last post, I did the Post Index, and was not shown as signed in - so I clicked on My Account - and went straight there and again got here via Track.

Hope these help you track down the problem.  Feel free to throw these away after its fixed.

Cheers

Blast....

I'd commented on this in the Maintenance thread, and thought I'd fixed it with restarting my browser. But once I hit this thread I was logged out again.

Got Some Issues

"My blog" link missing.

Must "re-login" at thread to post reply even though am logged in on recent posts page.

Clicking forum title on recent posts page does not remove the "new" or "5 new" link upon returning however clicking the "5 new" link does.

Appears you are always logged in but web page doesn't recognize it. Went to this thread. Logged in. Made reply. Went back to recent posts. Not logged in. Clicked this thread title and when this page appeared I am logged in and can edit.

Same here with a "twist"

The web site remembers my user name and password, so when I go back to the "recent post" index it displays my user name and has 6 dots for my password in the box and I just click the "log in" key and I'm back in, but when I went to Bernard's thread "burning down the house", at the end of the list of responses, I am then told to log in or register to reply even though I was logged in when I left the "recent posts" index to go to that thread.  The board did not do that on this thread!

lost login

I've been having this problem since about the time beta testing began, before the site was upgraded for all.  I had hoped it would clear up when the transition was complete but no such luck.

I guess I had really gotten used to the "old" look and functionality because now I am thinking... "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"!

Having same problem.  Every

Having same problem.  Every time i click on a thread, it logs me out.

This is exactly like the same problem that happened last time.  Though the problem was fixed within a few hours, so I'm sure this will be resolved soon.

I'm having the same problem

I'm having the same problem as well - mine started just this morning. I cleared all my cookies (too bad no warm milk) but it didn't seem to help at all.

Been experimenting with a more aggressive caching module

We've been experimenting with a more aggressive caching module since midnight last night - one that can be known to have "a few side-effects" but those side effects were not spelled out.

So we switched it on to see if it was going to work okay or have "issues".

I think we've pretty much proven the side effects are many and rather annoying regardless of how much faster they may make the site, so we've turned this particular caching module off again and gone back to the previous stable but slower caching.

There's at least a 10 different caching modules available for Drupal and we've now tried 3 of them.

1. Boost caching module - we were using this on the previous site and it works great when the pages are static, but the new ad-enabled content is dynamic, so boost caching does not work.

2. Drupal core caching - that's what we're using now. It's better than nothing, but it's also known it's not especially fast as the site traffic increases.

3. Drupal aggressive caching - that's what we just tried. It's known to be fast, but can have side effects. We're now ruled this one out.

On to another of the caching modules to see how it works. Unfortunately, running caching on a test server doesn't really help you gauge its value - the only real test is to turn on one of the caching modules and see how it does.

We'll get there - we still have many promising options. This site is getting such a volume of traffic now that we have to get smart about how the site is handled in order to keep it fast. And we're committed to doing just that.

So it's a bit of "pardon the noise" while we remodel. I appreciate your patience with us as we home in on the final answer.

Don't mind the mess, as long as we know about it!

I figured something like that was the cause! Usually places put up signes while they do it! ;-> (hint, hint) Test away as the only way to make progress is to do it...hmmm seems to me i've heard that before...oh that's right, it's what everyone is telling me to do with the model railroad! LOL!

If you could let us know, please, when the "testing" is all done so if this problem continues on AFTER you are done, we know it's a new problem, not the same one! :->

Yes, our bad

Yes, our bad.

I promise we'll post a notice whenever we make changes to the site - especially if we're trying out a change.

Losing your login

Okay, we made some changes that should stop the dropped login problem.

Let us know if things are better.

You may need to clear your browser cache and delete your old model railroad hobbyist cookies to get a consistent new behavior.

If you want to know how to clear your browser cache or to delete cookies, just google your browser name and that process. For example, if I use Internet Explorer (known as IE), just google ...

IE delete cookies

And you will get many pages stepping you through the process of how to do this. When a web site is changing a lot under the hood, you will get the cleanest response if you do this when the site recommends it.

Your browser will eventually catch up on its own, but this way you can tell it who's boss! (wink)

Thanks, Joe.

I figured that something was happening.  I had experienced this problem a year or so ago.  I just figured that if no one mentioned the problem, you would not know there was a problem.

I need to go do some work!

I first tried it out and found myself having the same problem.  Then I remembered Joe's advice to clean out cookies.  I ran a cleaner on my pc, but the problem persisted, so a ran the other cleaner that is installed on this pc and it seems to have solved the problem.

I think the log in problem is fixed

I've been clicking around all over the site- without cleaning my cookies- and I'm not being asked to login again anymore. I think it's fixed!

P.S. I'm using Firefox 3.6.13

Still being logged out

I cleared my history, cookies, and other stuff. Of course had to log back in. Opened this thread and was logged out when it had opened. Had to log in again to write this.

I also have been getting an error message when clicking IE back button: Page had expired. I believe that has something to do with the login.

Still a pain!

Joe,

Just checking the forums at 4:50p EST and already I've had to log back in 6 times, just trying to go from subject to subject - a real pain.  I know that you guys will get it straightened out.  I'm going to lay low ( stay away from the site) for awhile until it's fixed.

Hmmm! Strange - it works well for me.

I have logged in just at the start of my session about 4 minutes ago. I am using Windows XP SP3 and Firefox 3.6.13. I am able to select my account, Recent Posts and (to be seen as soon as I do a Save), post this reply. I have not done a "clear cookies" for many days. I have not done a forced refresh of page either. Back button and Recent Posts menu item seem to work quite well.

Wierd

I'm not exactly sure what's going on - we're getting rather inconsistent behavior here.

We're rolling back to the old tracker/recent posts listing and see if that helps.
