bobmorning

I needed a yard office for the west end of the yard on my layout.   I dug through my stash of the old and forgotten kits and parts and found this old AHM station in pieces and poor disrepair.    This building was on one of my original layouts as a teenager and hasn't seen the light of day in 30 years.

As built:                                                                          In Pieces:

I put the shell of it on the layout for placement and determining what dimensions to cut it down to:

After a few selective cuts, a new window, some paint, adding a new roof made from styrene sheet with gift wrap paper for the tar paper, and a weekend of working on it while watching football and this was the result:

This was an inexpensive ($0) and fun project to fill a needed structure on my Western Maryland Rwy - Hagerstown sub-division layout.

I am now working on a yard office for the east end of the yard, this one will be scratch built due to odd size and desire to duplicate the essence of the prototype yard office in Hagerstown.

Merry Christmas to all!

I like it

It's great to re-purpose older buildings. No real out of pocket expenses, compared to a new kit. You also have a unique building that others don't have on their layout.

Arlee station

Here is the same Arlee station in progress on my railroad. Walthers currently sells it as the Iron Ridge station. It is a kit with many possibilities.

Very nice bash, Bob. A bit of

Very nice bash, Bob. A bit of history; the kit was originally manufactured by the now defunct AHM and is based on a design and construction article from RMC by the late Rob Corriston. Corriston was the doyen of strathmore paper and used it for virtually all the components on his structures, including the windows. I tried my hand many years ago on another of his structures but just threw my hands up in defeat, and it's a testament to his craftsmanship.

Getting back to Arlee Station, unfortunately, AHM in making the tooling for this kit (and many others as well) made the window mullions way too chunky. I suppose it was a compromise because of the tooling technology of the day, but it is the one big drawback to this and many of the kits made in the old days. That said, your weathering and paint job has toned them down nicely, though. In any case, it's nice to see these classics still have a place and, with attention to detail, a good paint job and some weathering, can hold there own with the finer detail found on today's kits.

Cheers!

Turned out well!

With a little patience and skill it's amazing what life you can bring to old products.

Great job!

Chunky windows

The big package of assorted windows and doors from Tichy can help a lot when updating older kits.

I always like to see the old

I always like to see the old classics on a model railroad, they just feel right and remind me of some very happy times in my life. Nice work on the kit.

Very nice job.

Built same as a kitbashed a few yrs. ago too,  removed one side loading dock and added an over hang I-beam w/lamp.

Just love these old plastic kits we still find on sale.

Thanks 4 the pic's.

Great Job

I like to look for the old plastic kits and train shows. Usually can find them cheap and with a little work you can get the results that you did. Like the comment about the windows from Tichy. I will have to look into that when I  do the next kit bash of an old kit. It is funny how some of these old AHM kits have resurfaced under different MFG names.

Way To Go!

Interesting twist on an old stand-by. I guess there were not too many layouts made back in the day that did not have the Arlee Station kit on it someplace. Easily recognizable to say the least, yet you give one a cool new look as well as a new (yet old looking) useful purpose. Boarding up the window is a nice addition too; well played sir!
