Hello all!

I'm french and I model trains from... a long time ago now.

After to have built several different kinds of layouts in various scales, I would like to make a try in US O scale.

I've spent a lot of time to choose and to check what I want to build. I like countryside scenery, fall season trees, alcos and shortlines. Some existing layouts and rail pics helped me to find my theme. It will be: Iowa during the mid 1960's. My shortline comes from my imagination and is named the "Iowa Central" RR.

After a long time to design my layout: I've started.

I began by building a first part: a station.

The size is: 11' long, 20" width.

Here is a simple but general plan (updated in 2016) to show you.

_central.png

At the right end of the plan, the line crosses a wall to disappear into the stagging yard. On the left, it's the end of the line. Several extensions are planned for later.

I'm waiting for your suggestions, informations, help to correct my mistakes. I'm not an American guy (I'm French) and it's possible I've made mistakes.

Great !!!

It is great to see another O scaler among the group. I am interested to know the size of your layout. What are you planned to use as your controls, DC or DCC ? So far it is looking really good. I hope you keep us with the upgrades and progress of the layout. Nick

I agree

that it is nice to see another O scale Modeller here. One thing you may wish to consider it that the station may have lost passenger and mail service by this date so could be modeled needing some maintenance or abandoned. An old caboose might serve a freight agent and/or place for a dispatcher (if still used) to OS trains.

I love the prairie skyscrapers and they should be able to keep you busy switching as the busy season can be every day on a model!

Thank you Nick

Hi Nick!

Thank you for your kind words.

Yes, another O scaler... one more in the group.

I model O scale from a long time ago but from the last year, I would like to make a US layout.

The first part of the layout (shown on the above photos) is: 11' long x 20" wide + a stagging.

The next part of the "L" will be 22' long x 20" wide. But I see later for this part. I still have a lot of work to do with the first part.

About control, I think to use my usual DC system. I use it from N to 1/24th scale.

I'm not a sound enthusiast but it's possible I install a separate sound decoder and nice sized speakers under the layout later.

Yes, I'll post here the progress of the layout. I like to share my fun with trains.

And here it's interesting for me to learn about US trains modelling.

Thank you Neil - Merci

Neil,

thank you for your interesting reply.

About the station, good idea. I'll make a closed one. I'm thinking to something like the model on Tom Johnson's HO fantastic layout:

To add an old caboose? A wooden one without trucks. Yes, good idea and nice scene to make.

I like the small wooden elevators for their looking and for operation.

I've bought the Kalmbach book about "Grain". It's very interesting to learn about grain trafic.

On Rolling Stock

Hi Jack.

I have been modeling in American O scale for almost thirty years and I live in West Australia!

My advice for you would be if possible to keep your freight cars to 40 footers or less and maybe small switching type locos.

The smaller cars look a lot better on a small layout than one or two large freight cars crowding all the space.

Your off to a good start and I wish you well.

Hi Rooboy!

Thank you for your kind words. Australia is far but the internet helps a lot!

I like 40 footers they are nice.

Most of my stock is 40 footers and I have some 34' PS-2.
I have a 52' gondola and two CD 4740 grain cars.

My locomotives are ALCO S-2, RS-3, GE 44, EMD GP-9 and F units.

And the last need is to find a EMD SW8/9 to complete my roster.

I like the 50's and the 60's.

I think I go to model the first part of the 60's.

Thank you

SW8/9

Wow Jack ! I didn't know it was you. You have a nice piece of real estate for your layout. And I have to agree with you, you definitely need to get yourself an Atlas SW 8/9. They are beautiful runners. Although it seems that you have plenty of motors to run your trains but definitely you need to have a SW. I love mine and it is my favorite engine to run. As you know, I too have a Sunset 44 Tonner and a KTM Dockside 0-4-0. They are all great runners but still my favorite is the SW.

Looking forward in seeing your progress. Please keep us posted

To Nick

Yes Nick, that's me: Pierre's french friend

Yes I think I need to find a SW. This loco will be a good worker with my S-2 and my GE44. These 3 locomotives will be for the shortline company.

The two RS-3, the GP-9 and the F units will be for the Iowa Central and/or another company for another interchange.

Your dockside steam looks nice. It's a very small locomotive. Nice.

My Alco S-2

Hello all,

here is a photo of the Alco I'm preparing for my layout.

I started with a Lionel 3 rail dummy model I've turned into a 2 rail powered one. This engine still needs more work to be completed.

Very nice Jack

http://www.grainelevatorphotos.com/  This site belongs to Bruce Seylem.  His hobby is photographing grain elevators.  Looking at his pictures will give you more ideas than you would ever want.  I think you did a great job on designing your layout.  I would not change a thing.  Keep us posted when you start on the other section of the "L"

Bruce Selyem's website is very interesting! Many thanks for the link.

Ok, stay tuned for the following.

During the winter I don't work in my basement. I like to stay in my warm workshop.

Just a little video about my S-2 I've made on my French O scale layout.

I'm thinking to install a Tsunami "539T engine" DCC sound decoder... why not?

Nice.

Great to see you get started. I have been planning on building my Tidewater Southern in O scale for 5 years now. I am jealous when I see other people's benchwork going up!

For now I can work on equipment and track planning in my 24'x24' space.

Thank you wsflco for your comments.

I'm planning and checking for my project from more than one year now. Recently, I've tidy up my basement and I've found new space. I'm ready to begin! I just need some spare time.

Your two locomotives look very nice. Do you have more closer views please?

You have a nice space to build your layout. My space is smaller than yours.

Do you have any thread on this forum to follow our work please?
