Nope

It looks like it's trying to link to my files.  The attachment worker, however.

Did you already post a prototype photo that you're shooting for?

Neil,

Those palms look great.  Now relax and admire your work holding a drink with an umbrella in it.!!

Growing your own palms ...

These are trimmed by the parks dept to keep the coconuts and fronds from damaging cars (and people I suppose).

I need literally hundreds to represent the forests of palms in the gulches here so spending $12-$14 per tree is out of the question.  The most expensive part is the bag of feathers. All told I paid less than ten bucks to have enough material to make a dozen or so trees - takes 5 minutes each. Seriously. When looking at a group of them you tend to think that's the way they are and then focus on the trains again. I'm ok with a little wildness in the way they look. There are so many types of palms that it is hard to say one is "wrong" .

Sorry about the size here. iOS8 has some glitches. Neil

Green?

Neil, Just got a notice 8.1 is available.

What about the coloring of the palms?  What is your next step and how do plan to achieve it?

Neil! You did it!

Cool idea - and at 1/14th of the commercial price (which really appeals to a chiseling skinflint like me)!

I can't wait to see a grove of them!

Color

Here is a shot after a hitting them lightly with a spray can from Ace. They are like background trees for me so need to paint the trunk and give the top some highlights but I like the way they look.

Speaking of background, the HOn3 code 55 wye in progress is for Den to use in Louisiana.

Sri Lanka?

Thank you Dave (and all). This has been a fun diversion to mounting and spakelling some backdrop. I'll post photos later. Also enjoy seeing each of your posts and blogs so been lurking here late at night and saw Sri Lanka as your address. Very cool! No little tea kettles down there? I also saved the Prof's link to the Dolly Varden plan (mirrored back to the way I feel it better represents the prototype) and noticed that the hotel wasn't shown there. The POINT I'm trying to get to is "I need a Hotel!"

The OR&L built a destination hotel in Haleiwa (not unlike the big boys in Colorado) and, although it was on the mainline, mine could require the passengers change trains or a Pullman could be set out (like Yosemite) for the morning crew to deliver.

Any thoughts?

Wow!

Neil,

Those feather trees came out a lot better than I thought.  Those look just right.  You learn something new al the time.  Have you considered creating the thicker trunk models?

Maybe a short video?

Thanks guys! Posting here is encouraging and I may have the courage to show some of my crappy benchwork!

@DavB These are so easy that describing it would take longer than showing you. Somewhere is the GoPro and a short video would be fun to try. You'll need some floral wire ($2) and floral tape ($1.50) and choose some feathers that will wok in your scale ($3-$4).  Start wrapping some tape around the wire and add the feathers while turning the stem.  I like groups of 3.  When painted some of them can be bent or broken to turn down.

@Den we don't have many ornamental palms here. Some of the Royals were planted by plantation managers but the Florida (or Louisiana) fat boys are really something new here. Once the groves are done then I may try some foreground trees - give me a coup,e years (lol). P.S. Did you see the wye under construction?

Hey Jarhead where do you have that many palms? I planted all 7 of mine - former cane land. We wathey the last harvest and the property looked like the moon.

Interesting trees, very

Interesting trees, very nicely done. I model Appalachia so no palms for me, but I could see anyone wanting to use them or something similar if they model anything along the coast of Florida up to the Carolinas. I would imagine your method would also work for Palmettos as well. I'm sure that there are likely places in California and in Mexico that have them as well along the right of way.

We have lots of palms here in Cali but they are mostly a different type, some are very tall and some are very fat with fan shaped fronds.....DaveB
