In the April issue of MRH mag some writers panned my area of comfort and expertise, Armchair Modeling.  I have been doing it for many years and blogging about it for the last 2 years or so.  There is also another down under.

Someone once defined an expert as someone from over a hundred miles away.  Living in Yuma, AZ, qualifies me as I am about 200 miles from anywhere.  Sitting in a comfortable armchair helps one to think, meditate and contemplate the issues that really matter, be they in the hobby or in the world.  There are a lot of us out there that don't want to rush into anything, as that could result in making a mistake and one thing armchair modelers never do is make a mistake.  Procrastination was invented for us.  While many of you never put off till tomorrow what you can do today our only worry is that if we do that, what shall we do tomorrow?

We all know there are people out there in the hobby that are more knowledgeable than we, but, did you ever considered that there also people out there that think we are pretty sharp.  I am the self-proclaimed leader of those with no layout, no room, no money, no time, no hope, encouraging them to stand fast against the forces before us, the onslaught of doers.  Armchair Modelers UNITE!  If not today, maybe tomorrow.  Today it is in our minds, tomorrow, who knows.

I do a lot of armchair modeling with my various train simulator software programs. I also have a 12' x 2.5' ho analog train yard in my garage. So I guess I'm having my cake and eating it too.

Anyway, I say more power to armchair modelers! It's just a different way of enjoying the hobby.

Well arm chair guys

Several years ago a friend of mine that I worked with had a book sitting on his desk about procrastination. I commented on it one day it had been sitting on his desk for about three weeks, and he said it was a gift from his mother. Time went by and I asked him what he thought of the book and he told me he had not gotten around to reading it yet. He then paused for a moment and turned to me and said J. Rob I hate you.

He is still my friend and still procrastinates.

Even more than me.

Laws to live by

1) Do not do today what you can leave for tomorrow.

2) Do not do it yourself if you can find somebody else to do it for you.

3) When you feel like working stay in bed until fully recuperated and dysfunctional again.

4) Go back to #1.

I knew you were out there, I just knew it, but action would be required to find out, and......,well,.... you know.  There are thinkers and there are doers  Thinkers are visionaries, doers make mistakes.

I was a bit of a procrastinator for many years

Then I survived cancer.  It was during the chemotherapy when I started my own first layout.  It was during the recuperation in a hospital at one point that I was putting filing on some roof parts for covered bridges.

In the doctors office, they teach you today today, and tomorrow tomorrow.  Do what you can today, leave for tomorrow what can't be done today.

Procrastination

Mycroft,

So glad you are doing well. I have done my share of living today, 36 professional jobs, 56 home addresses, 2 years in West Africa, got my BS at age 60.  As I said on my first blog several years ago, "Armchair is where I think, .....model, .....blog,...   I don't post to put anyone down, but to encourage them to action.  It seems many people believe that armchair modelers don't model so I pushed their ideas out to the ridiculous conclusions.

I would encourage you to take a look at my blog history and see how I try to use humor to make a point.  I even get on a rant from time to time and sometimes get serious.

Best of luck with the layout, as the say "Make hay while the sun shines."
