A rather significant moment occurred on the Grimes Line tonight in the most insignificant way. I completed the final scene at Urbandale this evening... the Budget Storage lot.

Since the structures are mostly shielded from view behind a dense tree line I didn't invest a lot of time on details. It's a simple styrene core butted against the backdrop. Photo wallpaper is used for the sides and the roof is painted with rattle cans.

A lot details or not, I like the scene. Love your green work.

Why wood gates?

I'm not familiar with the wood gates(?) on the sidewalk. Is that a local thing? Do they move? What is their purpose?

Bike Fences

The fences are there to prevent bicyclists (and I assume roller skaters, skateboarders and the like) from flying across the track at speed. The gates are offset so that you have to stop and walk your bike across the tracks.

Gates

Ah, I understand. Apparently around here we just let them take their chances! Part of my confusion was how far across the sidewalk your gates extend. Looks like they should end in the middle of the sidewalk. That would make more sense.

Bike Fence

From the Google picture it appears that a lot of people and bikes go around the bike fences on the street side. I don't think that a lot of people like the idea of zig-zaging through the fences. How heavily used is this line?

angled crossing

There seems to be a lot of energy and ingenuity (to say nothing of money) applied to trying to frustrate people as they attempt to get around.

The issue here is not running into the train (it's only going 10 mph most of the time anyway,) but rather that the tracks cross the sidewalk at an angle, and people on bikes like to forget that rubber slips on steel, and that bicycle wheels get stuck in the flangeway and result in some spectacular summersaults.  I have seen similar, but metal gates used elsewhere around here for the same reason.

Fair. I'll move them further apart.

The Grimes Line is served on an as-needed basis. At best it's a single train 2 times a week.

It should be noted that this is obviously not the only grade crossing with sidewalks on the line, but is the only one with these bike gates in place. Besides it's not my place to say if they should be there or not, but it is my place to model them in a prototypical manner.

Great scene

Now you know you have to model that.....with a bike stuck in the fence and the rider launched down the path. Thomas G.

These scenes are really developing well

If I may offer an observation, self-storage places often use garish colors, at least on the unit doors, perhaps with a highly visible billboard.

You're absolutely correct. There are other Budget Storage lots in town that feature a bewildering array of orange and blue on their units.

However...

This particular location has the most muted (and wonderful to model) brown and tan units. The track runs along the backside of the lot with the entrance, complete with bright orange sign, located on the north side.

Crossing RR Tracks on a bike

Experienced cyclists know to briefly turn their front wheel perpendicular to angled rail crossings  -  just a little twitch to the appropriate side and back for a split second as you cross each rail.  You barely deviate from your path  -  it's a piece of cake.

Looks great.

The only thing left I can see doing is to blend the ground cover up to the top of the sidewalk. That way it doesnt look like its just sitting on top of it.

Chris.

The facility is can hardly be

The facility is can hardly be seen whoever is going to pass by. If I will build a business self storage I will make sure that it can be easily accessible and can be seen by the public. Light colors will do a good job to make it more attractive.
