I was toying with an idea last night. Originally I planned to use car cards, or something to the effect, to know when my units need to some in for a 92 day inspection (and I plan to actually inspect them for damage). I'm wondering if there's someone out there with Visual Basic skills, that could maybe make a program to do this for you? What I'm thinking is needed: -92 (or other settings depending on what you want I guess) day cycle -10 day early warning, Date Due "pop-up", 10 day late (shut down and DIT return..) -Way to tell the program the unit completed its inspection (needed in case it happens early or late, the cycle can be re-set) -Random set-up feature, enter all locomotives, and then it'll set up the locomotives to be checked randomly in the selected cycle range (I.E. 20 locomotives, initial set-up to be distributed within 92 days, so not all are at once) -Ability to add more locomotives, option to start cycle when added or randomly throw it in the range. -Ability to retire locomotives -Option for random "major" failures (I say option, because some people might not want it [I don't]) For the locomotive info, it can be basic: -Road Number -Railroad -Unit type -Maintenance cycle (92, 102, 120, ect?)

I would be up for doing

I would be up for doing something like this. What would really help is you all can collaborate on exactly how you want the app to work, what fields, what the screens would look like (mock ups a +), and I'd develop it as freeware. In other words I'll code it if you guys come up with a design spec.

Hmmm, sounds interesting. How

Hmmm, sounds interesting. How about adding a"deck of cards" of random events to the program such as failures and other events that would slow down or "challenge" the engineer on his/her run. This could take in effects of extreem weather conditions, track conditions and of course optional "failures" of equipment.

As an additional modual to software how about being able to build a concist on one layout and deliver it electronicly via the internet to another layout's staging yard??? Kinda like a virtual modualer club?

Model RR Utilities Online

Hi

We're currently adding utilities such as these to http://www.dallasmodelworks.com which will be completely free to use.

These utilities will include:

Inventory databases for your locomotives and rolling stock, including the ability to track values for insurance purposes.

A Car Card Generator which will allow you to create and print car cards from your inventory (We already have a non-database version of this at http://www.dallasmodelworks.com/interchange/carcard.asp)

A home page/website for your model railroad

Industry Car Request Generator which will create traffic on your layout by generating "car requests" from your layout's industries. This will be programmable by day of the week and season.

A Consist Generator which will randomly generate trains from your database. This is useful for through trains -- or if you just feel lazy.

A Bad Order Generator which will randomly assign problems to the cars in your roster. This sounds similar to what you are proposing and we will could incorporate some of your thoughts into its design.

Sounds good!

Craig, that sounds good. While I had hoped for a Java based (and therefore cross-platform..) open source car card system to be released by someone with more free time than I, I think its great you will have something out as freeware.

Do you have a mailing list or some such one could sign up for to get informed when you start releasing these items?

Regards,

Chris

I like that Car Card Generation software

Craig, That's a really nifty piece of software you have there. I may be using it, extensively, soon...

Why, yes we do

Hi Chris

Yes we do. You can go to dallasmodelworks.com and register as a member.

(You'll need to be registered to use the utilities anyway, as it's the only way to track which locos/rolling stock/industries are yours.)

Membership is free and we'll keep you up to date. The utilities should be ready in the next 3-4 weeks if not sooner.

Enjoy!

Craig

A tip...

Hi

Thanks for your kind comments!

If you start using the "manual" version that is on the site now, I suggest that you save your cards as PDF files or at least print multiple copies. There is no way to save the cards otherwise.

As soon as the inventory database version is up you'll be able to print cards whenever you want as the data will be stored in your own inventory.

Regards,

Craig
