Matt Forcum

Hey gang,

I've had another blog post disappear from the site.  It seemed to be up for a few hours and was getting views before it disappeared.  Is it being manually removed from the site?  Has anyone else had this happen to their blog posts as well?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-Matt

Blog Post Disappearing?

Hey Matt,

not a blogger myself but what happens to me on times (more then I would like to) is when I am done answering a topic with pictures added or not and hit "save" I am logged off and have to start all over what makes me some how go ...

I am sure some of the moderators will have an answer for this that will make us both go  again.

Happened to my "Shoofly

Happened to my "Shoofly Free-moN module" thread.

When I clicked on the link to it in the weekly update email, the thread disappeared.

I found it another way, and saw it had been "marked as spam" 99 times!
(Also views jumped from 900 one day to over 2,400 the next: and I know there's not that many people into Free-moN )

Anyway, I just clicked "mark as not spam" and the thread reappeared.

Hope this helps.

What I thought was Spam

The other day I noticed three recent posts that were legitimate, with some legitimate follow-in comments, but the last comment in each was obviously spam about IPhone Hello Kitty covers or some such thing, written in horrible English.  I clicked the comment's "Mark as spam", and only the offending comment disappeared after a screen refresh.

But now your comments make me wonder.  Is this what I should be doing if I see an obvious ad masquerading as a follow-up comment?  Did I cause your whole post to disappear?

I did write an e-mail to MRH asking what I should do, but didn't see a reply yet.

I may have personally been part of your "disappearing" problem.

Spam marking

If you mark the actual spam comment as spam, only that post should disappear, not the original comment.  If you mark the thread's initial post as spam, I believe the whole thread will disappear.  Perhaps someone marked these as spam, in which case a moderator will release them back to be viewed.  Its a bit of a pain, but spammers are a big pain.  Sometimes people will even accidentally click the Mark as Spam link instead of the Post Comment link.  These instances should be few and far between, though.

MC, your shoofly post ...

MC:

Your Shoofly post got marked as spam, but the (99) is the default minimum spam score setting and has nothing to do with the count of times it was marked as spam.

Also, the reason why your post traffic numbers jumped dramatically in one day is because we featured it in an email blast. That always sends traffic up dramatically all in one day.

So it's not quite the weird scenario you've been envisioning ...

Something I have noticed

I noticed this in the past and this is just a theory - I'm not an IT type.  But if I hit the reply button and entered a "reply" to a post and that post got removed (for any reason) then it seemed that my reply disappeared with it.  So now if I want to post something to an existing thread I do not "reply" I "add new comment."  I don't know how relevant this is to the current discussion and it may not happen now - just my thoughts.

Is there a way to "unmark" a post?

I have not done it in a long time, but once in a while I come to the site and find that the spammers have been "having a field day" on the site.  It seems that every new post I go to is spam, so I start marking them as such, and invariably if I'm not careful enough, I come to a post that isn't spam, and accidently hit the "mark as spam" button before I realize it.  When I've done that, I always have used the "contact us" link to let you guys know what I did, but I'm wondering if a person accidently marks a post as spam that is not spam, is there a way for me to undo my mistake, or must we wait for the staff to correct the mistake?

Mark as not spam, Unban IP

Moderators can "un spam it" and often do, so to some extent the system is quick to correct itself.

Nope, replies are unthreaded

Only the lead post is threaded - if the lead post is marked as spam the entire thread goes away, but moderators can easily resurrect it.

Separate comment posts are not threaded. If one comment post gets marked as spam, the rest of the posts in the thread remain.

Confused

Quote:

Hmmm.... the final < delete this comment> dialog box states that all replies to it will be lost. I took that to mean if someone clicks the reply link in another reply then both are gone if the first reply is deleted. It is for this reason I do not delete duplicate replies unless they are the last reply in the topic.

Is that not how it works?

Alan, that's native Drupal

Alan:

That's how native Drupal works, but we have the unthreaded comment module installed. So deleting a comment does say that any replies will be deleted, but you can ignore that warning because we've over-ridden core Drupal functionality with the unthreaded comment module.

All unthreaded comment does is make every reply link a reply off the lead post in the thread. That way only what happens to the lead post will affect all the comments. Marking the lead post as spam, for example, will make all the comments spam too.

I wanted the flexibility to delete any comment we wanted with no worries, so that's why we're using the unthreaded comment module. That way if we get a spam post, we can delete it with impunity if we want (best to mark it as spam first so we can also ban the IP if we need to).

Disappearing

Drupal Schmupal. . . all I know is that a young man posted two pictures of the old railroad bridge at Myrtle Beach. I made a comment that I had information on the Carolina Southern railroad that ran up to the bridge, and, if anyone was interested, I'd try to pull pics etc from my files and post the information. Going back a few days later to see if there was any interest, the post is gone and so is my comment.

You mean this post?

Do you mean this post: Neat Auto Bridge for JamesS

This post wasn't ever marked as spam, but it's on the bottom of page 2 already of the recent posts list. That could be your problem - the thread got pushed down quickly off the front page of the recent posts list.

Thanks

Yes, that's it. I guess I'm under the mistaken impression that the list "gets pushed down" in some semblance of order received/posted and not by the number of recent repllies or something. Also, when I check the box to be notified of activity I don't get an email or anything and just have to keep checking the recent posts to see if there is something new.

My mind's a bit foggy anyway at my age, but a brief explanation of how the "system" works might help me follow those things of interest to me. Thanks.
