Okay, what new full length how-to videos for model railroading would you like to see?

We're not talking the short snippet videos in the magazine, we're talking an hour long video you purchase from Model Trains Video.

Any hot topics that if you could see it on video, some of your modeling problems would be solved?

Meat and potato basics? Advanced techniques? Particularly thorny issues?

How-to video

I'm always interested in learning how other modelers build structures:  Scratch built or craftsman kits.

If you release another scenery video, I'd buy it right now.  You covered just about every topic in the original series, but perhaps a collection of advanced or alternative scenery methods.

How about a scenery video by another modeler

What if we released a scenery video by another modeler? Someone who does awesome scenery work that's more region and season specific?

Yep

I'm not sure if your question was directed at me, Joe, so I don't want to speak for the group but personally, yes I'd still buy it.  To date, everything I've purchased under the "model-trains-video" moniker has been high quality and well worth the money.  I have no doubt history will repeat itself in the next release, so mark me down for a pre-order.

I'll go ahead and be the first to ask...what's the release date?

What about

Howe about a baby-steps how-to on operations that won't be intimidating to the absolute beginner?

I want it all....

but I'll take what I can get.  Of course having other modelers for scenery would be welcomed - you can never have too many colors on the color palette so to speak.  Structure building would be nice - I find myself staring at Tom Patterson's stuff quite a bit lately  if I can throw him under the bus for either of these two categories.

Also maybe an updated DCC segment... the last one was very good but is getting a little dated.   Might I suggest a new benchwork section?   Say something on modules, FREMO and an ISL?  A collaboration of mentors - Lance for HCD etc

And of course the best seller will be an intro to the air brush... too many new and old hands fear the air brush and really there so little out there.  I have been wanting to put one together on the intro to the air brush but just haven't have time to even doing something basic other than a few notes for a someday project.  It would be a big attraction to MRH by having a plug on You Tube leading back to MRH/MTV.  Sales wouldn't be limited to the RR guys either.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head

Steve

PS it was all I could do not ask for more OPs session and the dreaded video that never was

I like the idea of having other modelers do a scenery video.

There is a big difference in the scenery of different parts of the country, and some of the techniques to model Arizona red rocks, or New England, or Southern Calif. deserts, or the Southeast.  As an example I remember  post by Rich, I think, on modeling Kudzu (spelling?).  I've never even seen Kudzu, and I don't think I need to model it in So Cal.  Someone modeling the L&N may well want to know how to model Kudzu.

Operations video

First time Operations are intimidating for many modelers. A video explaining what happens in a typical operating session. Understanding signals, Routes. How to communicate with the dispatcher.

New How To Videos

Though I model in N scale, as many do here, I would like to see videos by different well known modelers.  Lately I am intrigued by the works of Thomas Yorke.  I understand his work is in larger scales, but I sure would like to copy his work and reproduce it on my layout in N scale.  Hmm!  Maybe that is an idea.  How to take a O scale structure, measure it and reproduce it as scratch built in N?

Yes.

I want to see videos on anything I don't know and I have less of a desire to see videos on anything I think I understand (although I want to see videos on things I think I understand, but where my self-confidence is unwarranted).

Joe, you have an audience where our skill levels vary. It strikes me that, given that audience, you need to balance information across skill levels.  Experts  one monent, newbies the next (or vice versa).

Or, of course, you can carve out a niche market focusing on the MMR's or the novices, to the exclusion of the others.  It's your playground,  You get to decide.

prototype

I don't think we need another scenery video- Ten Mile Creek
is defiinitive of those.  It was uniformly excellent.

What I need is illustrated in the Ten Mile Creek  video where a prototype photograph was used as a guide for building a plaster rock wall.   A similar example is "Up the Creek" series in MRH - modeling based on prototype.

I, and I presume many others, are not able to see much of prototype railroading or open-country scenery. Doing searches on the internet can be productive but is time consuming.

What I would like to see in a new video is a collection of prototype pictures and then demonstrations of materials and techniques used to model the scene.

It doesn't have to be track-side geology.   Bridge abutments and  piers, tunnel portals, station platforms, loading docks, even detailing  steam locomotives could be presented as demonstrations of good modeling.

Thanks

A lot of the the above

Definitely structures would be one I'd be interested in, whether building a craftsmen kit or kitbashing or scratchbuilding.  There are things you can take away from any of those that will apply to lots of things you do on your own railroad.  And the airbrush how-to is a fantastic idea, from preparing the brush, discussion of air pressure, etc., to tear down and clean up.

< p> However there is one thing I would love to see in a definitive way - how to customize a diesel locomotive.  From changing certain details, adding others, body modifications, stripping paint, priming, painting, decaling and weathering.  This again would not only be applicable to locomotives but could be applied to structures and steam locos, too.  I see lots of stills, but actually watching some do the tasks would be of tremendous help to me the 90% visual learner.

More Hot Trains

I'd love to see a Hot Trains Video on 1980's SP in the Siskiyous . . . . and one on Kevin K. PNW themed layout . . . and one on Mark Dance's N Scale layout - even though he's got a ton of self- produced YouTube stuff . . . and maybe one more on Charlie's layout although the Alcos were HAWT!

Locomotive Maintenance Possible?

Locomotive maintenance may be an idea, especially the older brass steam or steam locomotives in general. I have not seen much information around on this subject at all. Quartering the drivers how-to etc. It seems a lot of this info is disappearing as the new modelers seem to be going into the modern diesel locos. The steam era locomotives, I have heard, can be a finecky lot from the information I have found.

It seems there are a few commercial/private folks that will do the required maintenance for a fee, but it would be nice as a model operator to be able to do the propper care for my fleet on my own.

Maintenance can be a bit of a drudgery, but a required evil for smooth running equipment.

Just an idea.

Structure building

My weakness is structure building. I would like to see more on building wood or styrene models including painting.

I know there are other videos out there but I find the price to be a barrier. Joe's downloads have always been affordable for me.

A Little Off Track

I think that now that Allen Keller has "retired" someone needs to pick up the model railroad layout visit series where he left off!

Each visit could focus on how the layout owner runs his/her ops sessions.

Just kind of thinking out loud here!
