MRH readers, Model Railroad Tips will be offline for an unknown amount of time. Seems my webhost (1&1) came up with some bogus "server resource abuse" problem I was generating. They've (without my prior permission), moved my hosting to a new server, causing some downtime. I'm not sure how long it'll take to get back up and running, I'll post here as soon as I know. For now, I'm busy disputing their claim, and I've asked for proof of the "abuse" and commented that I've considered dropping one of the other sites from the domain (maybe it'll help). I checked my hosting admin section, and I'm using about 1.3% of my allotted usage... I'm going to consider upping my own server here at home, for Model Railroad Tips, but money is an issue there.

With the aid of the staff at

With the aid of the staff at my host, we've tracked down the problem to a separate domain that got hit by a spam bot, over 180000 hits in a day. That site is now offline, and I hope the sever team can get my FTP and websites back online tonight.

So, Josh, What is "Model Railroad Tips"??

(you're not just "Joshing" are you ?)

P.S. Nice article on West Goffs detail. I found the spot on Google. I wanted to record the Lon/Lat, but, alas, Google is "googling" around with their product and I can't get the new "beta" stuff going.

Thanks, Josh, I hope to get to it when it comes back on-line

So now I have the URL, I'll check it out later. Did not see any advertising for it as I recall and I've read almost every page of every issue. I know of your work as I have seen it in the mag and in these blogs, so I'm sure there is much value there.

@Dan - Thanks for the comment on his site. If you think it has value, I know it is worth the browse.

Thanks for the post guys.

Thanks for the post guys. Nothing yet, still down. I'm going to call the host in the morning if it's still down. The tech department works "normal hours" oddly enough.

Well Model Railroad Tips has

Well Model Railroad Tips has reached a week offline. No status updates. Must have some crappy technicians at 1&1. They can't seem to figure out how to put my files on a server and target the DNS to the files... Good news is they've offered to foot the bill for this month's hosting. All things considered, that's not much of a constellation prize since the only thing that works is my email.

Time to Move?

Maybe it's time to move your host, Josh. I use Bluehost out of Utah, and have for years. I've found their service and up time to be fantastic over all.

Another vote for Bluehost

Bluehost is tops - however they only do shared hosting, which won't work for high traffic sites or most corporate sites.

Because they cater to consumer-level hosting, not corporate level hosting, it means is they lock down certain pro-level management capabilities around hosting that makes hosting a corporate site with them a bad idea.

The good news is because they've focused on inexpensive shared web site hosting they do it very, very well.

Bluehost costs more then I'm

Bluehost costs more then I'm paying, Godaddy as well... Model Railroad Tips is back online... They found the problem and fixed it, only took a week.

Less is good

Less than $6.95 a month is good! Personally I've been happy enough with their service for my purposes, that I haven't bothered looking around for a cheaper alternative.

Glad you're back up and running, a week down, regardless of what you're paying, can be very frustrating!

Glad it's back up!

I've been waiting. I was surprised to find you were having a problem with 1and1 - the company in the UK I do support for uses them and they have been superb, but maybe it's because they use the UK affiliate.

Will keep ypur site in mind and have a good look/see soon.

Thanks guys. 1&1 has been amazing, just think they were a bit lost in moving files like they did. Oh well, all is well. Now to find a new cell provider before AT&T swallows up t-mobile.

Josh, you might consider adding < DIV ALIGN=CENTER> to your site pages.

Alan, is it acting up for

Alan, is it acting up for you? Most importantly, browser/operating system, and what looks funny? I've viewed the pages on XP, Vista & Win7, with Opera, Mozilla, IE & Chrome, and never noted any issues (besides the weird tiling to the top tab bar). The problem I may face in doing this, is the code was not developed by me, so sometimes when adding to the code, it takes some time, because adding one thing presents another issue... Take the "share this" buttons in the forums, they took 3 days of tinkering to get them to look decent in the software.

Pages are Left Justified

Win 7, FF 3.6.15

On blockchoice.com your pages are left justified. Most put the pages center justified like the MRH site. Looked at your CSS. It does place the page on the left.
