Hi All,

I’m at it again this year.  No more shoveling snow (and hopefully very little coal.)

I’m still a lone wolf so far with my layout.  It’s a little farther along now.  I did have a couple non-model railroaders and one model railroader running in the cellar during this spell of COVID.  It’s still a good way to turn up a few more problems! Four falls ago I put out a topic asking for people who wouldn’t mind having a visitor stop and see and maybe run on a club layout.   https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/club-layout-posting-12208268  The response was very good.  More places to go than time to go there!!! The last winter’s visits and revisits were a major fun time.  A side prize was that I was also taken to some local layouts to see some very fine modeling also!  I will look forward to revisiting my new friends from years past and making new friends this year.  This blog will be about my experiences and thoughts on the road this winter.

I’ve been thinking about operations and am out to learn as much as I can about operating sessions.  Getting good pictures of model railroads and their operators is a major order of the day too!

The last trip got cut short in the late winter of 2019 so I want to make up for some lost time!

Now I’d like to leave you with some glimpses of the larger memories I will carry with me from today.  (In the next posts...)

Test run to Clarksburg, West Virginia.

I have a friend who I fly with in his Cessna 172.  He said he wanted to do a mission.  I had one in mind.  Larry Linger does superb decoder installation videos on the YouTube.  Larry and I have worked together over the phone and by email for a while now and I wanted to meet him.  He is part of a model railroad club too.  What could be a better basis for a mission?

The Clarksburg Model Railroad Club is in the large basement of a commercial building in downtown Clarksburg, WV.  It houses a number of different scale layouts.  It starts wit a loop of Z Scale mixed in with s loop of American Flier, a pair of finished N Scale layouts, an O Scale layout on the build and two HO Scale layouts, one permanent and one for travel to shows.  Here are some pictures of the layouts.

Looking at the downstairs shop.  We decided we have a lot of tools in common but will need some more neat ones....

The master’s workbench in the upstairs shop!  I hear it includes a new “non-squeak” chair too or maybe I don’t hear….

This was a great visit and great start to a new series of visits!  I'm psyched to get the motorhome on the road again!  Thanks Ben and Larry!

Nick, glad to see the mission

Nick, glad to see the mission worked out. Nice to see you getting out and about. I'll bet you made much better time in the plane than the motor home and likely used less gas to cover the distance! I definitely recognize the jug on the hood of the truck!

Wow I am glad too see our club layout on a model railroad forum.

Larry has taught me a lot on things along with Jim Farry and John

new people. Stop by sometime and see us. Thanks for the great

Stopped at a personal layout in Robesonia, PA today.

Tom Jacobs gave Angela Sutton and me the royal tour!  The Crossline represents the Reading in the 1970s.  It is seven years into the build and represents a monumental effort.  Tom has a Facebook page that has more information and good progress reports.  Enjoy a couple photos of the layout!

The layout is a layered mushroom.  This is ground level and staging.  The helix, where the dispatcher will sit, is on your left and the stairs up are to the left of the helix.

The two long wall are next and in order.  Signals, structures and scenery are the next major projects.

Here are some parts that are well along the way.

Angela masterfully guides a mixed freight through the full, well behaved layout and back into staging.  This and a very detailed tour by Tom made for a very pleasant visit to a very magnificent project!  Big Thank You to Tom for sharing his day and his Crossline!

These are great Nick

That Crossline looks like a club layout all by itself.

Speaking of motorhome touring, I have a Wanderlodge for sale.  It has room for a layout!

I've decided to change the format of my layout presentation.  This is easier and for anyone who wants a single jpeg or raw photo, please ask.

This is the first of a number of YouTube videos I want to share with you all.

I'm finding I like the picture format because I can focus on something that catches my eye. Maybe someday I will get better at it....

The first stop on our winter tour was in Robisonia, PA. Angela Sutton and I were given the royal tour. Tom Jacobs was kind enough to let me take pictures of his layout, The Reading Company Crossline, to share with you all. Thanks Tom!

Here's the YouTube link,

NEAT!  Thanks for sharing.  I especially love the recreation of the "Nighthawks" scene.  A print of that hangs in the dining area of our home.  🙂

Last November 29, 2021, Sue and I stopped to visit Seth Gartner. Seth gave us the Royal tour of his layout. I took a couple pictures that you might be interested in looking at. Needless to say I was very impressed!!! I’d like to get back to an operating session when I’m in the area again! Thanks for the good times Seth!

On December 15, 2021 I stopped at Mike Walsdorf's to visit and take some pictures of his L&N MNO&P division.  I promised pictures after a visit two years ago.  The first time through I was just plain absorbed in a passenger train run from one end of the layout to the other.  It is a considerable undertaking and Mike has achieved very impressive results. Hope you enjoy!  Thanks for sharing, Mike!

WOW, what a really nice layout,...so many good ideas. I particularly like the way he did some of his 'flats',..like here,

What was the overall size of that layout??

Just a short, but important compilation of three layout visits this time.  These happened after the first of the year in 2022.  Enjoy!

Found these videos of Tom Jacobs' Reading Crossline.  I did no video editing.  I left Tom's tour narration on for an idea of how in depth he has built his history into his layout as well.  These videos were taken on November 20,  2021.  I know Tom's layout has progressed considerably since then.   The video helps me to put the layout in perspective.  It is truly a massive undertaking!
