Picked up an Atlas H-16-44 with the Lenz 4 function decoder.  I moved the jumper plug to digital mode.  Using a NCE Power Cab I set the address to 3.  Both front and rear headlights are lit and the engine doesn't respond to any command inputs, e.g., moving forward or backwards, lights on or off, etc.

Any suggestions?  I haven't moved the jumper plug back to analog mode and tried it on a test track.  Is there a way to reset the decoder?

CV19=0

My first thought:  Make sure CV19 is set to zero.  If it is in the range 001 to 127 the decoder will respond to commands sent to the value in CV19 instead of your address 003.

Try the last two digits of the cab #

For a spell Atlas engines with their dual-mode, non-sound decoder came from the factory with the address programmed to the last two digits on the cab.  So cab # 3015 was short address 15.

Scott and Mark, thanks for

Scott and Mark, thanks for your suggestions.  CV19 was set to zero and entering the last two digits of the engine number didn't work.  I started Decoder Pro and set up a new loco.  It now responds to throttle commands.  What doesn't work properly are the lights.  F1 turns the lights on and off but neither setting them for directional or Rule 17 through Decoder Pro works.  Pressing F0 (lights) doesn't work, either.

What did DecoderPro identify the decoder as ?  Atlas dual mode or other.

Did you plug the TV in before you tore it apart?

A 9 volt battery on the motor might be a good place to start.  Just sayin’.         ( ;> ) )

I don't have my laptop with me at the moment but IIRC it identified the decoder as Atlas H-15/16-44.  I'll look tomorrow when I have access to my laptop.

DecoderPro should offer you to chose between the Four Function Dual Mode and the Four Function #345.

From reading thru the Atlas manual

http://download.atlasrr.com/pdf/HO_H15-44Manual_Atlas.pdf

It looks more like you should be using the first one, not the H15/16 specific version.

Since DecoderPro  Id'd the decoder via read of CV8 and CV7 (plus a few more it reads during the process) , the motor is functional via the decoder. So your test is pointless. If not functional, it would have ended in an error code.

That is if he let DecoderPro determine the decoder and this was not simply a wild guess on his part.

just sayin...

Thanks, Marc

Thanks, Marc.  The Atlas decoder manual says it is the #345 decoder.  That's what JMRI set up as the decoder for the locomotive. I'll go back into the lighting functions in JMRI and reset them.  If that doesn't work I'll manually set the CV's.

Update

I moved the decoder chip back to the DC setting on the motherboard and the headlights came on normally depending on direction.  Moved the chip back to the DCC setting and no headlights, so the problem isn't the chip but the motherboard.  I think the best plan from here is to replace the stock motherboard and decoder with a replacement.  It looks like ESU, TCS and Tsunami only sell sound decoder replacements for this engine.  Does anyone know of a non-sound drop-in replacement decoder?

I am not positive but I think

I am not positive but I think function six puts this locomotive in shutdown mode. Check this to make sure you are not in a shutdown mode. I have had this happen to me and it was very irritating to find. It should be in your paperwork for the locomotives. I might be thinking of another atlas locomotive that had this problem but I would check this first.

You want a decoder that

You just plug & play right?  Otherwise any mobile decoder will work.  You just have to be sure it fits.  How many wires in the existing plug & how many actually do something?

So many trains, so little time,

Lighting functions

Rob, the other lighting function works (class lights) so the loco is not in shutdown mode.

Larry, "plug-and-play" is not

Larry, "plug-and-play" is not the term I should have used because the wire leads to the the motor and lights are hardwired onto the motherboard.  What I meant is a drop-in decoder that will fit onto the mounting brackets.  LokSound makes one that does but I don't want sound.  I'm considering using a Decoder Buddy but it doesn't have cutouts for the mounting brackets.

All make non-sound decoders

All the companies you mentioned make non-sound decoders that will fit your Atlas diesel.  Add in Digitrax and NCE to your list.  I think the current Digitrax decoder for replacing older Atlas and Athearn boards is the DH166AT.  ESU makes the LokPilot.  I think the Soundtrax versions start with MDX but I can't swear to it.  TCS's is the T6X?

You're only getting sound decoder results because you're asking for one specific engine.  You need a generic decoder.

Digitrax makes a non-sound drop-in replacement, the DH165A0.  ESU and TCS do not.  I appreciate your assistance!

You could also have used the Soundtraxx MC2H104AT  which is drop in, non sound as well.

I'll second this.
It's a very good decoder, I've used it in several engines.
