A bit odd, but definite possibilities...This modest in Vermont has a 28 x 40 ft wing that used to be a jail, unused since 1969. Seems to me a perfect space for a dream layout - take it out to the studs and start installing subroadbed

Oh my.... You would think

Oh my.... You would think people wouldn't want a place like this but my wife would totally jump all over this and gut the place. Maybe she will donate some space so I have a bit more room for my layout haha.

I Wonder...

How much all the metal and plumbing would get as scrap? Or selling window bar sets on e-bay?

How well aqre the jail cells built?

Depending on how the bars and cell doors are installed, woulld determine how difficult it would be to gut that wing.

It would make a nice space for a layout if you can gut it and get rid of the cells and plumbing.  It has been on the market for 2 months, you might be able to make and offer and get it for less if it appears that it would be difficult to remove the jail.

That would make a neat model RR home!

However, I would check first to make sure it wasn't on some kind of historic landmark/house registry. If it was you would be severely restricted as to what you could do with changing the structure: walls, windows, etc.

Well,

I noticed that the CNN article has a link to the realtor listing. It's priced at $149k. Last sold in 2018 for $75k. Year built 1878. (As in "Reconstruction era", 142 years old, unless it's a typo and it's only 42 years old).

So what would make a home like that double in price in 2 years? Maybe some free national advertising courtesy CNN? Is the reporter related to the owner or the realtor? Just asking...

I too wonder if you can gut it or if it's on a historic register and you have to preserve the jail?

Better as a B&B?

LOL!

I’d totally live there. Gut the cells and donate to a museum. Even On30 would be comfortable in a space that large.

Keep the cells and put know

Keep the cells and put know it all’s and nit pickers in there. I have experience putting people in those things if you need any pointers.

Is it bad I thought the same thing?

Every time I look at a real estate listing I think of where you could put a model railroad.  When I read the story about this place I thought exactly the same thing.

Hmmmmmmmm.........

Honestly, they'd have to pay me $149k to take it off their hands before I'd consider it........not sure I'd even take it at that price.

 Everybody's different.

So what would make a home

Real estate market is really hot in Vermont right now. With the telework paradigm shift expect a lot of people from Boston and New York to move to Vermont.  Vermont is also a small state (2nd least populous), so any little change in raw numbers is a respectable % change.
