charliec.jpg MRH is pleased to announce that Charlie Comstock has been promoted to Editor of Model Railroad Hobbyist magazine.

"Charlie has proven his ability to assist with the task of editing and delivering magazines during our bimonthly schedule last year, " says Joe Fugate, Publisher and founder of the eZine. "With our move to monthly in 2011, I know I can count on Charlie to expertly lead the process of releasing more frequent issues without compromising quality."

Congrats

Congratulations, Charlie.     Great choice, Joe.

A question, though:  does this mean that Horace could get some sort of "titled-position" at MRH? ; and that we may be hearing more often from him?

What this promotion means

This promotion recognizes some of the work Charlie's already been doing as my right hand guy here at MRH.

It also means you will first be dealing with Charlie and not me when it comes to queries, article submissions, and so on. Charlie is becoming responsible for the day-to-day operation of the magazine, and I will step back to work more with the overall operation of all-things MRH: advertiser relations, managing our web presence, and so on.

Charlie and I will likely collaborate on a lot of what happens with the magazine, but over time, it's going to become first and foremost, his baby.

Great Choice

This is a great choice, but I hope that we will still see BC&SJ videos and photos.  Charlie's work has been a great motivator to get me out of the chair and into the basement.

Joe, I know that you have been very busy with the Ezine, but would like to see some updates to your own Siskiyou layout.

Thanks, for all that you do.

Thank you, all...

Joe has some big shoes to step into (gunboats actually, according to Horace). I'll do my best. Please be patient with me! And yes, I hope to still have time to actually play with trains and work on the layout.

So thank you, for your votes of confidence.

Best regards,

Charlie Comstock

Congratulations Charlie!

Your last post in this thread prompted thought about friends of mine who went to work for Athearn.  I have three good friends who now work for Athearn and are involved with product development.  I asked all three if they do any model railroading anymore, and the response has been, I get my fill of model railroading at work!  I hope that doesn't happen to you or Joe!

Hail to the Chief

This is Great News as Charlie is the only guy other than Joe I would have voted for to take on the position of  Editor. actually this isn't a surprise to many of us. I knew Joe was going to need more help when we went monthly and he couldn't have picked a better man to steer this ship.

Congratulations Charlie were behind you 100%.

I know it's not how you meant it, but this conjures up images of my first major narrow gauge love, the South Pacific Coast. In the late 1880's they were running huge lumber trains down to Felton on the Boulder Creek branch. From Felton they'd double or triple the hill to Laurel then off through the summit tunnel and down to Los Gatos, Santa Clara, then across the Salt Marshes to Oakland and Alameda.

It seems that all too often one of the link an pin couplers would snap turning the rear half of this lumber train into a battering ram. If there weren't enough brakemen on the back half (battering ram) to get enough brakes tied down quickly enough all the crew in the engine could do was open the throttle wide, tie down the whistle, and pray that they'd stay on the tracks all the way down the steep grades to Santa Cruz. It wasn't unknown for the engine to be out at the end of Gharkey's Wharf over Monterey Bay and have the second half coasting to a stop behind them!

So I'm hoping there are enough brake men on the rear half of the publication staff so I don't have to do that!

The South Pacific Coast RR

The SPC Was and still is My reason I went Narrow Gauge. Up until Blackstone offered its first K-27 Mudhen I was planning to build the SPC narrow gauge. Blackstones DCC and soundtraxx sound switched me over to the RGS and D&RGW.

I have built so many renditions of the SPC over the past 50 years I decided to switch over to the Colorado RR.

The South Pacific Coast RR was the railroad that my two best friends and I road from Santa Cruz to San Leandro before we got almost caught and jumped off. We All wondered what the real SPC was like as it had been dismantled by 1940 or at least straightened out a lot. Then we caught a south bound 6 hours later and rode that to just past Felton and Big Trees where again while traveling past Felton we were hiding in large pipes with 36-48 in Diameters when we heard from behind us "HA WHAT-IN-THE-H----ARE-YOU-DOING-IN-THERE"?? I don't think I ever left a train that fast in my life. We walked from there south to Rincon (about 8 miles) where we called our friends living in Santa Cruz to come pick us up.

At that time the line was no longer narrow Gauge of corse and belonged to the Southern Pacific but we did spend the following day at Roaring Camp and Big Trees Narrow Gauge RR Park and that finished off a great weekend. Thanks for bringing back old memories.

Good luck Boss man.
