Is anyone familiar with the PS2012 Power Supply from Digitrax?  Came across it today and was wondering if I could use this for powering not only my soon to be acquired DCS100 command station, but also use it for powering my BDL168 detector board, possibly my signal boards, power for LED's on the fascia, and even for powering lights on the future on the layout.

On the N-Scale selection, it would output 13.8v at 20amps.

I guess I should say my goal would be to have a single power source for the layout instead of dealing a multitude of them for each application. I like to keep things tidy and consolidated if possible. It would be nice to simply flip the switch on a single power supply and everything turn on.

Is this even possible with this single power supply, or do you need multiple power supplies with different voltages?

Thanks.

You'll need multiple power supplies

You will want multiple power supplies - for lots of reasons. If you want one switch to turn everything on, get yourself a power strip with an on-off switch.

Each booster on your layout should have its own power supply, since that isolates it in case you have issues - also you don't want your track power to be mixed with any other layout power for things like turnouts or layout accessories. Plus your bus should have its own power supply ...

In short, what you're trying to do is not a good idea. One switch is a good idea, sure, but one mega-power supply is NOT what you want if you want a system that's reliable and easy to debug. Look for other ways to do the one on-off switch.

Thanks Joe.  I had a sneaky

Thanks Joe.  I had a sneaky feeling it probably wasn't a good idea.

I don't disagree with Joes

I don't disagree with Joes advice for your particular case, but if memory serves (50/50 chance! ), this particular power supply has two seperately protected 5 amp outputs and may be appropriate for use with two boosters in some circumstances.

You may want to pose the question on the digitrax yahoo group if you care enough. Personally I would use muliple smaller power supplies as Joe recommended. Its cheaper and more redundant.

NCE boosters need separate power supplies

NCE boosters do indeed need separate power supplies - if you try to hang more than one booster off the same transformer input, it fries the booster ... ask me how I know!

Digitrax PS 2012

The Digitrax PS2012 is designed for use with two Boosters, like a DCS200 (8A) Cheif and a DB200 (8A) Booster. For all other components a seperate supply is recommended. See documentation on the Digitrax site;

http://www.digitrax.com/manuals.php

Our modular group, Free-Modu-Rail uses one supply see the photos and schematics at the following URL:

Scroll half way down, if you have any questions I would be glad to answer them.
