I have decided to start up a thread about riding a train. What city or cities did you ride a train in? For long-distance train rides(e.g.- Amtrak, VIA Rail Canada), list the cities you had traveled to. Here is all the cities that I had ridden a train in:

-Los Angeles(LA Metro light rail and subway, Metrolink commuter rail)

-San Diego(San Diego Trolley)

-San Francisco/Oakland(BART, MUNI's streetcars)

-Portland, OR(Tri-Met's MAX light rail, Portland Streetcar, Westside Express Service commuter rail)

New Haven to NYC

After Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in 2005, I took a job at the airport in Groton-New London, CT.  For the holidays I flew my girlfriend up from Mississippi and we took Amtrak from New Haven, CT to Grand Central Station, NYC on December 22nd, and returned on December 24th.  When the Spring came, I moved back to the Gulf Coast.  The only other train I've ridden on was the 3' narrow gauge Cedar Point & Lake Erie at the Cedar Point Amusement Park, Sandusky, OH.  As a kid that was our annual family vacation destination.  It's been almost 30 years now since I was last there.

Trains...

The Empire Builder from Chicago to Seattle and back. Awesome trip.

TGV to Paris. Seemed more like a plane than a train to me.

My favorite trip was through the Alps to Florence, Italy, mostly hanging out the window.

Berlin(East and West), Munich, Hannover, Hamburg, Trier, Amsterdam, Brussels, Florence, Salzburg, Luxembourg City, etc.

Used to work on a tourist line in Indiana, rode that train a LOT, often in a caboose.

Two or three steam excursions in Ohio.

What City(ies) Did You Ride A Train In?

PC and Amtrak

North East Corridor

Trenton,NJ to Providence, RI

New London, CT to New Haven, CT

New London, CT to NYC round trip many times

MBTA

Mansfield, MA to Boston round trip many times

NYC subway system

Washington DC Metro

SF cable cars

The New London to New Haven ride was on one of the last runs of the Turbo Train and I was in the lounge which was looking out the windshield through a glass divider between the lounge and the engineer.  I grew up in this area and we seemed to be going a lot faster than 60 mph in some areas.  I could see the speedometer but not really read it.  I thought the large numbers were 20,40,60 etc.  When we got to New Haven I asked the engineer and he said no it is 30,60,90 etc.

Link to a pic from the lounge out the windshield.  Link due to copyright etc.

Had I known they were soon to be gone I would have ridden them more.

My Dad was an executive at Amtrak. We had employee passes. I was a CSX conductor. It might be easier to tell you what trains I haven't ridden!

Trains I have ridden

Frisco - Memphis, TN to Kansas City, MO then ATSF to Topeka, KS and return. Three or four times as a child ( less than 10 yo)

Frisco - Memphis, TN to Kansas City, MO then UP to Manhattan, KS. Probably four trips each way when I was in college.

On my first trip on the Frisco I remember eating in the dining car. My last trip was one coach and the handful of passengers got box lunches at a stop along the line... sad.

Tourist trains: Georgetown loop, Durango and Silverton, Combres and Toltec, Black Hills Central, Sugar Cane Train Maui.

Washington DC Metro, Denver RTD light rail, SF Cable Cars, BART

Do these count? : Seattle Monorail, Denver International Airport

Grand Central Terminal

Not Station, just to pick nits.

Track either stops at the bumpers, or goes around in a reversing loop on the lowest level.

One of many,

and probably the most unique, was during my tour at Kunsan AB, ROK in the late 70s

Janghang-eup (across the river from Gunsan City) to Pyeongtaek (about 115km, I think)

The total trip to visit friends at Osan AB was: Bus from base to outskirts of Gunsan City, Boat across river to Janghang (that was an experience in itself), Train to Pyeongtaek. Bus to Osan. Never understanding the boat schedule I would just take a base to base bus for the return trip.

Others:

Richmond CA to Sacramento CA as a Scout

San Antonio TX to Rantoul IL - basic training to tech school

Rantoul IL to Chicago

Ome, Chuo, Tokaido, and Shinkansen (plus some others that I can't remember) while stationed in Japan

Georgetown Loop, Durango & Silverton, and Cumbres & Toltec

London to Paris

NTV Italy

DC Metro

NYC Subways

Trains = countryside that you cannot see from any other form of ground travel.

A short list

My first train ride was in South Carver, Massachusetts when I was a kid--Edaville Railroad.

Many trips from Acton, Massachusetts to Boston on BUDD RDC's, once again as a kid.

All over Boston on the T

All over DC on the Metro

Amtrak, Boston to DC in the pre-Acela days.

Multiple rail excursions in Conway, NH, Lincoln, NH, and up Mount Washington

Too young to remember most of the destinations, but to Bern, Switzerland from the town we stayed in, and multiple trips through the Swiss Alps.

I put in a lot of miles as a kid, thanks to my railfan father.  In 1958 we rode the B&O’s National Limited from DC to St. Louis, the Wabash Bluebird from St. Louis to Chicago, and returned to Washington via the B&O’s Shenandoah. We rode the Lehigh Valley’s Black Diamond from Allentown to Wilkes Barre and back and took a short ride on the Lackawanna’s Phoebe Snow out of East Stroudsburg, PA.  We rode the Reading’s stainless steel Crusader from Philadelphia to Jersey City and back.  We also took a short trip on the N&W out of Roanoke while checking out the last of steam (the train was diesel-powered).  All of these are very vague memories.

As I grew older we rode quite a few excursions, including several Reading Iron Horse Rambles to Gettysburg, Tamaqua, and West Milton, and a PRR Off the Beaten Track trip from Philly to Altoona, including trips around Horse Shoe and Mule Shoe Curves.  We took a short RDC trip on the Boston and Maine our of White River Junction and rode the Reading into Philadelphia from Perkasie (RDC) or Lansdale (Electric MU), PA on numerous family shopping trips.  We rode the D&H Laurentian from Montreal to NYC and back behind PA-1s and rode the Canadian Pacific from Montreal to Quebec and return.  We also rode the D&RGW from Durango to Silverton.

I rode the Reading from Philly to Pottsville and Perkasie to Bethlehem in RDCs several times as a teenager, as well as several Quakertown and Eastern trips over the Lehigh Valley and Penn Central.

As an adult I’ve ridden Amtrak’s Crescent from Philadelphia to New Orleans, regional and Acela service from NJ to DC and Palmetto service to Charleston and Savannah and return.  I’ve also ridden several NJ Transit routes and lots of tourist lines, including Cumbres and Toltec, Georgetown Loop, Cass, Blue Mountain and Reading, Wanamaker, Kempton and Southern, Strasburg, Gettysburg, etc.  There have also been rapid transit rides in DC, Philly, NYC, and others, including riding a Brill bullet car on the Philadelphia and Western interurban.  I’ve been to Europe several times but haven’t had a chance to ride the rails over there.

I rode as engineer on the first train to come to St George (within the last two years).  A 1/4 scale CP Huntington on Thunder Junction at the city All-Abilities Park, a venue with facilities and attractions specifically designed for people with special needs.  The passenger cars can hold three wheelchair patrons.

Seattle Center Monorail

Folks, the Seattle Center Monorail in Seattle does count as a train ride. It is a official public transit route. I had included the Las Vegas Monorail on my list of train rides. Wendell

Seriously? I'm the only one who's ridden the trolley in New Orleans? (pronounced "nawlins") Quite the experience on a very hot and muggy August evening with a bit of a hangover after a day of meetings. Other passenger trains that i can recall right now: New Hope & Ivyland, first train this Colorado boy ever rode on. Penn Central, Newark to Providence (I think, I was about 8. I remember you could barely see out the windows, they were so dirty and scratched.) The Southern Crescent, and the Amtrak imitation A Southern steam excursion or three Georgia Northeastern Santa Claus train Illinois Railway Museum dinner train Black Hills Central Crandic special Pittsburgh trolley MARTA Washington Metro And for roughest ride on a passenger "train", the Galloping Goose at the Colorado RR Museum. Can't imagine riding the length of the RGS in that creature.... Scott Chatfield
