Where and why?

Yeah it doesn’t pay to look to closely at our model wheels and flangeways

So where was that, and what happened?  I came up with nothing (OK, well, a bunch of other derailments) with a quick google.

Speed

If they are inside the curve then it’s not going too fast.  More likely too much throttle with brakes set or tonnage.

Couplers

Could have been cause by those old Mantua loop and hook couplers.

hoping nobody was waiting

at the grade crossing... try backing away from freight cars leaning toward you!

I'd think speed would have also ripped up rails.  This train suffered string-lining... lightweight cars pulling heavy, or (as Dave said) cars with applied brakes.

Makes sense, sharp curve.

Dave and Peter - Makes sense.

Well usually the way you can tell loads from empties is by how compressed the springs are, but I’m not sure that’s going to work here - those springs sitting on the pavement don’t look compressed at all.

It does look like a fairly sharp curve, very hard to tell if there’s any super elevation there.

Ah yes...

Called "Stringlining".

Never did it in all my years handling trains, but I've seen the results of others.

I wonder if a bunch of

I wonder if a bunch of empties could have been struck by a truck, and as one went over the rest continued till a large number turned over. Stuck brake possibly or an emergency application. Then there is the possibility of a broken rail not in the picture. The track in the picture looks pretty good.

One more thing, notice there is a diverging track in the picture and there might be a turnout just out of the picture. I wonder if the turnout was thrown under a car and all of this started from a derailment at the turnout.

Hazelwood

On May 14, 2015, 13 cars of the Allegheny Valley Railroad derailed in Hazelwood, PA (Pittsburgh area).  They were immediatley behind a 5-loco consist.  Dozens on tankers further back in the train stayed on the track.

Looks like even the big boys string-line trains.   (A prototype for everything)

All empties

Whole train of empties, according to one of the articles.  Apparently the train was moving at 10 mph.

There are several others available all saying the same. FRA will take maybe 6 month to assess a reason for this. In the scope of things this really was not a big deal for the railroad. It cost them a lot to clean up the cars, but nothing compared to what it would have cost if the cars had been Hazmat.

Derailment

A whole bunch of empties on the head end of a train with a lot of engines and a lot of heavy cars in the rear going around a "tight" curve.   That shouldn't take too long to figure out.

Probably....

Someone put a 50 cent piece on the track to flatten it, everyone knows you use a quarter

I have seen that one before

I have seen that one before and it never fails to shock me how they could be so dumb. I'll bet there was a very interesting report to go with that incident as well.
