When Warflight finally completes his train of Oscars and Pikers, he's going to need some unusual power to go with it, isn't he ?

I was thinking of a 2-4-4-2 compound articulated, perhaps in a Mother Hubbard configuration.

Or a center cab made of two Athearn Hustlers back to back as a center cab. Use the rubber band drive as it provides diesel sound at no extra cost. Sort of.

BRILLIANT!

I like the idea!

I was using this for the ones already built:

But I always thought something either shorter, or obnoxiously longer would work as well...

Maybe a Vanderbuilt tender?

Okay, so...

I have a lot of train parts, and locos in various states of disrepair... I just may have to cobble together something absolutely ridiculous!

What about a 4-2-2-4 mallet

What about a 4-2-2-4 mallet ?

YES!

That would be BRILLIANT!

A Big One?

Stubby cars could look good with a 2-10-10-2 where the boiler is articulated.

Contrast is beautiful.

If the unusual is what you want...

Get another one of those 4-4-0s and smash them together until you get a Beyer-Garratt.  I've only seen one 'Americanized' Garratt kitbash (a what-if D&RGW 2-8-2 + 2-8-2, made out of two K-27 kits), so an Old-Timer Garratt made with Russian iron and a diamond stack...?  Yes please!

(I have an odd affection for Beyer-Garratts of pretty much any variety.)

Awesome!

I love that idea, but I'm trying to visualize it...

NZGR B or E Class Double Fairlie

I have always wanted to model one of these.
The Fairlie Patent was an 'articulated' engine that was not fixed to the boiler.
A Double Fairlie was just that - two engines and two boilers with one cab, Coal was carried in the side bunkers. These locos saw life down light branch lines.
These have gotta be a scene stealer - for which you can pull out a prototype photo!

Oldtimer Garratt

Warflight,

I will see if I can put together a little sketch of an Oldtimer Garrett in my free time. (No promises.  )

I love the model llamas.. you know it's a model because

it uses a (well concealed) mirror.

And if Warflight uses mirrors, he could have  a FLEET of Fairlies!  (say that 3x real fast!)

If you want a truly impressive Garratt

Hi all,

One recent addition is missing from the list of commercial Garratts. It was a collaboration by DJH (UK) and Model-O-Kits  (Australia) in 7mm/' (1/43.5) scale of the NSWGR AD60 4-8-4+4-8-4 Garratt. It was available both as a kit and rtr with various numbers that matched the build variations (as delivered, heavier axle load with extended bunker, Dual control with heavier axle load and extended bunker). All the r-t-r's are sold and most of the kits are sold. Caution - This is not a loco-build for a beginner.

I'll be back with a photo here when I can find one of mine.

At just over 3' long, this is a very impressive model when it rolls past, but on 32mm gauge it won't match or couple to Warflight's Oscar and Piker

Regards,

John Garaty

Beyer-Garratt

The Beyer-Garratt I'd really like to grab for myself is the NGG16 Garratt - the 2-6-2 + 2-6-2 narrow gauge... that is, TWO FOOT narrow gauge... locomotives now used by the Welsh Highland Railway.  Backwoods Miniatures made kits for them in OO9 scale.  And they also made a kit for the Darjeeling Himalayan 0-4-0 + 0-4-0 Garratt...

Unfortunately, Backwoods seems to have shut down services, so the kits don't seem to be commercially available anymore.  I'll eventually muster the courage to kitbash something together...

The AD60s are pretty imposing machines, and I do like them... but I just keep going back to those two-foot Garratts.

@Leo

Keep it coming! That is AMAZING! I can't wait to see it finished!

Lately, most of my Oscars and Pikers are boxed up (only so much room on the layout) however, the Norris engine is still running with a singly Piker, and Oscar, with some "Steampunk" elements to the consist.

Double Fairlie

Here's an Sn3.5 scale model of 'Josephine', the NZR 1872 E class Double Fairlie I'm currently building from a Mark's model works kit.

I see water tanks and two boilers, where is the fuel? Nice model, attractively done.
