No images! Don't recommend IPA for electrical contact cleaning

You need to change some security settings on your site. Try logging out and then visiting the URL -- you will see what we see -- no images!

By the way, don't recommend IPA (isopropyl alcohol) for cleaning anything electrical. IPA is a polar solvent, which means its residue encourages the quick buildup of new oxides once electrical current is re-introduced to the surface that's been cleaned with it.

In other words, cleaning electrical surfaces with a polar solvent will cause the surface to get dirty again more quickly once the electricity flows again.

You want to clean electrical surfaces with a non-polar substance like mineral spirits (or better) electrical contact cleaner (which is by design non-polar).Ethyl acetate also works (it's slightly non-polar) but it's not as good as a stronger non-polar solvent.

Detoxit electrical contact cleaner is a good choice. IPA has been banned as a wheel or track cleaner on the large La Mesa club layout in San Diego because the wheels and track get dirty faster when cleaned with IPA.

Detoxit on Amazon ($13.25 free shipping to prime members):

As a side note, graphite is also a non-polar substance. Applying a micro-thin coat of graphite from a graphite stick has been shown to inhibit micro-arcing and slow down the buildup of black gunk oxides on clean track and wheels.

I only see the main photo, the rest are not loading. But, its the usual paper towel and one truck at a time routine.

Depends.  I bought a used

Depends.  I bought a used Athearn RTR SD45 that had been run enough to build up a layer of hard crud; I am guessing alcohol would not magically remove that thick layer of crud.  I took and Exacto blade and scraped most of it off carefully.
