Virginian and Lake Erie
umauma railway, A frequent poster that many of us know was recently injured in a bike crash. The injuries were serious but Neil is I believe recovering. I thought since we have not seen a lot in the way of posts from him lately all of us that know him might want to sign my scratch built internet card for him.

Get well Neil, we miss you on the Blogs and the forums. We all wish you a speedy recovery and hope the pain killers are not drugging you senseless.

Now just for grins you might be able to post all kinds of things right now and blame it on the medication.

Now for everyone else that wants to sign the card just make a post with a comment and Neil will see it and get to feeling better.

P. S. maybe the old steam engines and ALCOs were wise to stay out of the roads......???!?!

Speedy Recovery, Neil

Hope that shoulder heals quickly, and correctly.  BTW was there any damage to your bicycle to indicate what may have been the cause?

Warmest Regards,

Thanks guys

OK, ya’ll got me choked up.

A while back I posted the question of there were many bicyclists (cyclists) online and found that is one more thing a lot of us have in common. Do me a favor and don’t follow this lead!

I commute about 17 miles to work 2, 3, and sometimes 4 times a week. Saturday is a group ride where 4-12 of us go out and tackle the volcanos. These can be 30-60 miles or more. I’ve only once before fallen and broken ribs. Another time a van stopped in front of me while I was training for a time trial and went from 30 mph straight to the hospital.

This time I remember my bike sliding out from under me. It had been raining but the roads were mostly dry except for where (I believe) the fall happened. My bike computer suggests that I fell and got back up and went another 1/4 mike or so before I found a safe spot to pull off the road. From there a police officer found me and followed the ambulance to the ER. A friend picked up my bike, a carbon fiber frame with aluminum wheels, and said it looked fine. Strange. I don’t remember any of this.

For the next week the hospital had my lung inflated and draining since the ribs created punctures.  A week ago Wednesday I was released and taken off the opioids. I slept for the next two days! Since then recovery has been steady of slow. The doctors are all impressed and my blood pressure is good and heart rate low. Today the Othopedic surgeon suggested that surgery on the broken clavicle wait since my range of motion is good and the medication be changes to muscle relaxers.

In the meantime I have been enjoying reading of everyone’s progress and know summer is slow for model builders like us as other things become important. My wife want to see me get on a stationary bike to blow off some steam (god bless her for being such a great nurse, companion, and champion of my rights in front of the doctors. Well she  is an attorney).

Thanks Rob and everyone for your thoughts and prayers. Back to our regularly scheduled trains.

OnThe Mend

Neil, Glad you are recovering and on the mend. Posts by you and Rob In my blog have been very helpful as I stagger around in this hobby.  So, you must keep up with your posts on MRH to all of us, despite your injuries.  We would be lost without your advise and teachings.

Get well!

I hope you have plenty of good reading material! When I'm in hospital, or bed ridden, reading material is a must! If it weren't for that pesky ocean in the way, I'd be bringing you books!

Getting good vibes in Hawaii!

Thanks Bud!

Steve - You are too kind. Glad to share what I know. What I don’t I make up - er - ask!

Joe - You are an inspiration and I want to get back to the railroad. Why did I build it so high?

Richard - Been reading “A Full Life” by Jimmy Carter. A greater man that I ever knew.

Ivflats - I miss the Puget Sound, especially this time of year. That is a classic shot too. Thanks.

Speedy recovery...

And maybe slower cycling for a while.

A wife who can run interference with the hospital is a godsend. Thank her for taking good care of our friend.
