It's not April Fools -- Bruce Petrarca, the MRH DCC Columnist, is retiring as of the August 2018 issue.

Bruce is also doing a DCC book for MRH, which we will publish.

But that's it for Bruce. He's going to focus on doing the hobby for himself and his local club -- the nerve of some people! (wink)

So, we're on the lookout for a new DCC Columnist! If you're interested, please use this link to express your interest and send your background details for why you feel you might be qualified to be our new DCC columnist:

Hmmm, Maybe we will see Bruce

Hmmm, Maybe we will see Bruce at more operations events.  That is great for us.

Book is a good idea

Sorry to see Bruce retire.  His columns constitute a valuable reference work for DCC.  Glad to see there will be book.

But I love Bruce.

Bruce's column is the one thing I look forward to in every issue. I am a DCC addict and I need my fix. I'd volunteer as a columnist but I haven't the years of experience he has. In all the magazine's I read I always am on the lookout for DCC columns and articles.

Bruce will be missed greatly.

Daniel Coombs

Joe, you should talk to Ken Patterson, perhaps Daniel would be interested.

No!!!

Just when I was getting the hang of DCC.  Thanks Bruce for all your knowledge you shared with us. The beauty of MRH is that I can still refer back to all his columns for reference.

I second Will’s suggestion about Daniel Coombs. He is a young modeler with a very good understanding of DCC operations and products.

Thanks

Bruce,

Thanks for all the time and effort you put into your DCC Impulses column. It has been an incredible source of information for all things DCC related. You really did a wonderful job of making the magic understandable for those of us who are less electrically inclined.

It was your columns on decoder installation in the January and February 2012 issues of MRH that I remember most. I was just getting serious about operations and was struggling to get my locos to run well, especailly the sound units. I followed every suggestion/tip in your columns and it made all the difference in the world. Running trains became the joy it should be after following your advice.

Enjoy your next adventures!

Bruce will be very difficult

Bruce will be very difficult to replace and there just might not be anyone his equal.

I agree with Rob...

Bruce has set a very high standard. I am going to miss his column.

Where do we sign up for his book?

Aw, shucks, guys.

You make me blush.

Thanks for the kind words.

Hopefully the book, tenatively titled Mr. DCC's Book of Knowledge, will make a lasting impression on the hobby.

I've been working on it for two years now and just don't get the time to finish while doing monthly columns.

I may do an article or two here or there.

Fear NOT, Bruce

I'm standing in line already!

Having Just made the jump, your book will match the capabilities of the product I have... and I will have a steep learning curve ahead as I digest your information.

Here's hoping you'll be seen dropping in and offering a few nuts and Volts from time to time.   Best wishes!

Peter

Will Bruce continue with the MrDCCu.com web site or has it been active lately?

Can't wait. Where will I be able to buy this gem?

Nevermind, I just answered my own question by actually reading a post. Imagine the things I could learn if I read more?!?!?! LOL!

The MRH Store

You will be able to buy the book on the MRH Store and also on Amazon. We've started selling books on Amazon and that's going quite well -- the sales numbers keep climbing every month. As for when, we're hoping sometime later in 2018 ... all depends on when Bruce is happy with the final product.

Mr. DCC’s University . . .

is mine. It is an offshoot of what I created for the Litchfield Station website, when I owned that enterprise.

It costs me a few bucks a month to register the domain name and host the site.

Plus I keep my blogs running there.

Scale vs gauge . . .

did NOT enter into this situation. I had made up my mind before that.

Really quite coincidental: agreeing with Joe on my retirement & the second anniversary of my MMR & the scale vs gauge discussion & April Fools Day.

It is hartening to see the interest in my book.

Sad about the column...

...really happy about the Book!

Bruce's column is usually the first thing I look for in the magazine. I will miss it for sure. I will love having all that collected wisdom (experience?) in one place.

You could make my day... or year...

....with a chapter or two going through a pane by pane explanation of the JMRI Decoder Pro comprehensive programmer with examples from more complex decoders than are in the documentation.

Like, how does forward and reverse trim actually work? How about all those BEMF settings? What do all those light options mean!?!?

It is frankly, something I'd love to see the manufacturers take on for their own products.

Absolutely, Jeff

All the cryptic settings that you are never sure about what they actually do would be cool.  However, I now have the LokProgrammer and all but two of my locos are LokSound (maybe someday they all will be if I take a notion) so JMRI sees very little use for me now.

LokSound....

I've got some LokSound, and a LokProgrammer. And I really need to sit down and work that all out.

I'm still wavering between Tsunami2's (which have a lovely socket in which to plug a keep alive) and the LokSound (which wants you to solder wires to three pads, on different sides, of an N scale decoder).

Can you tell which way I am wavering?

TCS keep alive motherboards

Jeff, the TCS keep-alive motherboards solve the whole keep-alive headache. They stick the capacitors into interesting nooks and crannies you often can't get otherwise and there's no special wiring needed. Just plug in the decoder and go.

The LokSound 21-pin decoders plug right in.  And the TCS boards come with 1K LED resistors on the board, so just solder your LED leads to the board pads and you're done.

To me, the TCS motherboards solve the space problems of adding keep alive to locos, and they make it plug-and-play easy. I also like that I don't need to fiddle with resistors or shrink tubing on the loco's LED lighting leads.
