Well I have taken an interesting undertaking up I am going to make a tiled poster of comics cut from the back of each RMC going back to the 1980's it is a huge project but now have less than half a paper box left. I hope it turns out great and it really is a big but I think in the end it will be worth it, will post a photo when I am done but don't know how well it will turn out.

Looking forward to it. On a MRR cartoon note, I remember a Model Railroad magazine cartoon I can't seem to find anymore, it was late 70's or early 80's of a guy downstairs with a bunch of champagne crates - getting drunk as his wife is at the top of the stairs, and he is saying "The government approved my train grant request for 25 million dollars!" or something to that effect, been looking to find a copy of it for awhile, but I don't have access to their archive. Does that on ring any bells to anyone here? If so I'd love to get a scan of it.

RMC has/had cartoons?

I don't have any RMC issues to look at right now but I'm drawing a blank.

I don't recall any cartoons in RMC...

Over the years, I've done cartoons for several magazines and newspapers, and I really need to get out of the layout room long enough to draw some to submit to MR. I'd offered to do some for the NMRA magazine but was told they had a guy. And I hope I'm offending anyone when I give a giant "meh" to the ones they run...

Here's an example of some of the history-related ones I did for a Brit magazine a few years ago (most of the jokes won't make any sense to some of you): http://www.freewebs.com/willysmb44/rearechelon.htm

Yes, they had cartoons. It seems to be a staple of the hobby. One I remember, not sure who published it, involved two railroaders with a large spray gun and rolling stock going by. They were surrounded by rail fans in the distance and the spray bottle was marked weathering. The caption was it is just water but it drives those guys crazy.

I really like how this turned out and no all the comics are in a place where they can always be enjoyed.

RMC has/had cartoons?

I'm not sure who started the idea, or when the first cartoon was added to the magazines, but yes both Model Railroader and Railroad Model Craftsman had cartoons.

RMC Cartoon from the March 1974 issue.

MR Cartoon from the October 1984 issue.

Cheers,

Rich S.

I appreciate your cartoons. The one about the tourists looking for directions had a special connection. While stationed in Germany with the Air Force a friend and I did a bicycle tour. We had heard about a camp ground from one of the locals and went to check it out. What we found was a French military base. The 2 of us wearing only shorts, tennis shoes and riding 1o speeds loaded to the gills with camping gear were taken for spies. Since neither of us spoke French and the 2 guards acted like they didn't know English there was a lot of irritation all around. We came to the conclusion that if they were serious they could chase us down and rode off into the sunset so to speak. No they didn't chase us, but it was a good indicator of just how unpopular Americans were with the French at the time.

Vietnam was going on and the French really didn't like Americans too much because our government thought they could do what the French hadn't been able to do in Vietnam. Anyway politics aside it is good for a laugh now, and thanks for the reminder.

Nice RMC toons!

Wow, good stuff that's been posted here.

I now recall seeing a section in a 1976 RMC issue I have (the freedom train one when they did a 'tour' of various layouts with a O scale Freedom train) but I guess I wasn't a regular reader of the magazine in the timeframe they had toons.

Those are very good, much better than what runs in MR there days. I talked with the then-editor of MR at the Portland NMRA convention and he said he wanted to see some submissions from me but was specific that he he didn't want to see too much detail in the drawing portion. I've not been a fan of the minimalist approach to toons in MR, though...

PS: thanks for the kind words on my own stuff, Jack!

Great to see those again!

Great to see those again! Thanks for posting, and I hope others that have MRR cartoons will post them here too!

P.S. I can definitely relate with that Kadee coupler springs spilled carton, I just had an envelope snap open full of those spraying them out over a carpeted bedroom floor. What a nightmare cleaning them up, I did use a shop vac with some pantyhose over the nozzle to speed the pick-up but I'm sure I've missed a few.
