I recently published the third and (probably) last piece of my 'Leaving the city' series:

As in the other pictures of that series, I used an in-game screenshot from virtual reality artist Anthemios as a background picture for a TT scale (1:120) model scene. However, in contrast to the other two pictures, it is less prominent. The structure that dominates the central part of the scene is not part of it but was made from a real world photo. Here are the two other pictures that have already been posted earlier in other blog and forum entries:

In another forum, these pics led to some discussions. Users pointed out that, while the scenes look amazing, they are not very realistic since trains from the late transition era seem to pass through dystopian city landscapes that look rather modern or even as if taken from a near-future SF setting. These statements are completely right. In contrast to most of my other model scenes, these pictures are pure fantasy settings. It's rather a kind of digital 'Dieselpunk' art than railroad modeling. However, since we had comprehensive discussions on fantasy modeling in the MRH forum (see  https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/complete-fantasy-12197144), I think these pics are worth to be shown here. MRH has always been an open minded community where you can do some stuff that is completely out of the mainstream.

The layers?

Hi Joern, Interesting tapestry of images.  Is the large trainshed building a model or a photo flat of some kind? How about the bridge over the red Rock Island engine?  Do you have a conventional TT scale layout too? ......DaveB

Conventional TT scale layout

Hi Dave,

Both the shed (actually a platform hall) and the bridge were taken from a real life photo I took 2014 at Berlin subway station Gleisdreieck:

Yes, I also have a conventional TT scale layout, see this older blog entry: https://forum.mrhmag.com/post/tt-scale-us-layout-12197634

More on my layouts and dioramas, you find on my homepage at http://www.joernpachl.de/model_rr.htm

Game scenes

About five years ago, I started to experiment with game screenshots as a backdrop for model scenes. This picture is my very first attempt from 2012:

It's still far away from the quality of my recent pictures. However, one of my early pictures was featured in MRH's 'Yes, it's a model' section: http://mrhpub.com/2014-11-nov/land/#79 At the time, computer games were also still quite far away from the almost photo-realistic quality they have today. So, I'm quite happy that VR artist Anthemios granted me the right to use any of his pictures for my model scenes.
