One neat aspect of this hobby is that there are a lot of modelers who share their time and expertise to help other modelers build layouts. This is the case with a layout currently under construction for Mike Moore. Mike was confined to a wheelchair shortly after moving into a new home. Obviously, this puts a damper on his ability to build a layout, so to help with the work his friends, Clark Propst, Bob Gretillat, and Bob Drenth stepped in to start construction.

Original plans for the layout were changed to accommodate wheelchair access, and the track plan modified for more of a railfan approach. Mike is modeling the CB&Q in northwest Illinois along the Mississippi River in 1968 where the tracks pass by the famous Portage tower. Information on the area Mike is modeling was covered by author Jeff Wilson in the 1999 issue of Model Railroad Planning.

In the next post I’ll share some photos that Clark sent showing progress with the layout.

I recognized the California Roadbed Homasote. I still have some left in a box from years ago. Is it still available?

Great job everyone.

Great job everyone. Fellowship, and helping another guy out who is in need are some of the best attributes of the folks in this hobby. There are many others as well. It is real nice of you guys to jump in and give of your time and skill, your friend will appreciate this more than words can say. Thanks for sharing.

Work progresses…

It doesn’t take this team of experienced modelers long to make good progress. Below are a couple more shots of work along with captions.

ob-track.jpg Here is Bob G. pointing to the new ME yard lead turnouts.

Just look at all that fresh wiring growing out of the masonite … and you thought the growing season was over!

ack-work.jpg Track work around the Portage Tower area.

It won’t take long before these boys have trains running for Mike.
