Hi,

I have all the stuff I thought I needed to layout some code 40 N scale track. However, while I can find templates for building turnouts in several places, I can't find any templates I can use for laying out ties to out down for "non turnout" track. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Right now I am looking at just using a .125" or .15" spacer to lay them out on some masking tape, but a printed template would seem more elegant.

XtrakCAD will print ties on a track plan but they are not really suitable for this purpose i am thinking.

I am also thinking I need to solder the rail to the pc ties before I place it on wood ties since the pc ties are thinner then the wood ties..

Thanks,

Chris

Would the Fast Track stuff work for you

You can use the Tie Rack jigs to align the ties (not that expensive) http://www.handlaidtrack.com/tie-rack-tie-jigs-n-c-5_823.php

You might also use the straight tracks assemply features for the PC ties http://www.handlaidtrack.com/n-straight-track-c-6_24_1584.php

I have seen those

I had seen those and may pick up the tie rack jig at some point. Even if I was to order it today, though, I doubt I would see it very quickly. I was going to consider ordering that if my track laying experiment was positive along with some more supplies to help with turnouts. I don't see myself using the assembly jigs. At that point, I might as well just buy flex track.

What I was really looking for is a printable template. I really wish XtrkCAD printed a useful tie template because then I could lay the track right on my track plan.

Laying the track directky on your tarck plan

If you were able to print out the track plan at the actual size of your track you might just be able to do that. Unfortunately, I don't know of any software that has that capability built in.

I can tell you that any track planning software product that could do that would probably the best selling product in the category within 5 minutes of its announcement.

I can print the plan the

I can print the plan the actual size, just the ties seem more ornamental then accuarate. I did that with my current layout and transferred the plan using transfer paper and a stylus or pounce wheel depending on my mood.

For my straight demo track I think I can just use the fast tracks turnout template, ignore the diviging route, and line up the edges of the ties with the straight side. If I like the results, I will look into the tie jigs.
