Hi,

For a future modeling project, I'm looking for prototype photos showing a traditional, e.g., rather small North American depot building in an urban or industrial environment. Does anybody have some pictures or suggestions for links?

There's Some Around

Right off the Minnehaha Falls depot in Minneapolis comes to mind. This is a case where the city grew up around a once isolated area. You might also check out Reading Company examples in Philadelphia or the Pennsy in the Pittsburgh area. I recall seeing tiny stations setting directly adjacent to steel mills there.

Reading RR Stations

 try Google maps:

Ardsley, Glenside, on down into Phila. Pennsyvania.

Ardsley is wood station small 30 x 15 ft. where others are stone.

Have fun looking.

Not sure what you mean by

Not sure what you mean by traditional, but here is the current Omaha Amtrak station. It's been there for a few decades now. It's across the tracks from the old Union and Burlington Stations and a few blocks from the center of the downtown and industrial areas. Google maps will show you the surrounding area.

Just a hint, when you're looking for photos format your Google search like this:

image:traditional train station

That will get you closer to what you want a couple of clicks faster.

By the way, the Burlington station was purchased by the local ABC-TV affiliate and is now their studios.

The Amtrak station is in the shadow of the restored stations, and looks pretty much like the little brick box that it is.

Hagley Museum

One of my favorite sources is the Hagley Museum and Library Digital Archives:

http://digital.hagley.org/

They specialize in industrial history, so have lots of railroad oriented pictures.

small depot in an urban or industrial enviornment?

You'd need to look at the prototype area you are interested in to see if it was likely or not. Most large cities had central passenger stations and rapid transit light rail or bus service to the various areas so a small depot might be uncommon. There's certainly an example somewhere but it might not be where you want to model? .....DaveB

Thank you all..

...for the interesting hints where to look. I already found some places that may fit into my scheme. The reason behind my question is that I recently acquired a nice lasercut kit for a wooden TT scale depot. Now, I'm looking for a suitable prototype situation for a modeling project.

What style is the depot model? Knowing the style would help narrow down the search for a suitable location. ....DaveB

Wooden depot

Dave,

It's a wooden depot with the typical booth for the train order operator on the platform. The photo does not show exactly the same model I got, but it's very similar.

Minnesota-Wisconsin Iron Country Grunge

I would look at GN depots but I think whatever you choose, it will need some minor modification since most railroad depots have a specific look based on who built them.

Here is an awesome junction in the heart of Iron ore country and Industrial Superior, WI just begging to be modeled.

Check out his other twin ports albums as well, they are excellent.

small batch kit

Dave,

It was made by a small batch manufacturer from Halle, Germany. There is no public website, available kits are just offered in the German TT scale forum http://www.tt-board.de. They have just announced a freight house that would fit very well to that depot. So, I will wait for the freight house and then design a scene using both models.
