It's a German themed layout again!

After dismantling the N scale

After dismantling the N scale G&AM I'm switching scales and themes again. I will be building a German H0 layout that expands on the concept of the first Breitenbach - Rosenheim Railroad. The railroad will consist of a double main (electrified) and a single track branch line. There will be one big city (an idea I wanted to save from the G&AM) and several small towns or villages. The layout will be DCC and highly automated, trains running to a typical train schedule like the European railroads operate. It will be heavy on passenger trains.

At this point I'm still in the process of clearing up the room and finishing my work shop but because I get asked all the time about the new upcoming layout I'm going to publish the track plan as it exists today. Changes are still possible.

A pdf version of the track plan is available  here

The cat is finally out of the bag!

I've known for sometime Michael's plan for his dream German railroad and I'm glad to see it coming to life (shortly).  I agree with Michael that rolling stock that ran on German railroads is much more interesting than some of the U.S. stuff.

No, Michael - I won't be switching to German!  I'm a dyed in the wool Louisville & Nashville fan!

great design

That looks like a great design. Can't wait for the elves to begin!

Oh, you most likely need to hire German elves, or spend a few weeks teaching this group German.

Michael is this layout any

Michael is this layout any smaller in actual feet and inches than the one it replaced? Have you considered two decks to allow you to shrink the foot print further if you need to? I am generally not a fan of European prototypes however I will be definitely watching yours, do you think it will be completed in time for Oktoberfest? I have this visual of Rick showing up in lederhosen with a large mug in his hand running trains.

Back to HO

Wow, what a hugh shift.  What is to become of all the N scale track & rolling stock?  Or is there a double deck in the future?  Thus one does not appear to have as many mountains.  Looks great.  Look forward to seeing the Bavarian country side develop.

So many trains, so little time,

Larry

All the N scale stuff has been boxed up. Maybe at some point in the future (retirement?) when I will have a lot less space I'll have to go back to N.

Rob, yes, the room is about 10' shorter now than before. And no, double decking is not a concept I like. Now the idea of Rick in Lederhosen...

Back to HO

I dared to HOpe and it's true!

DCC, highly automated and the German theme...vunderbar!

I hope you are looking at Digitrax and Loconet also.

This should be fun to follow!

prototype inspiration?

Hi Michael,

Looking at where Rosenheim and Breitenbach am Inn are located, makes me want to ask questions about your track plan ...

Are you planning to build towards a specific prototype location and era?

There is no relationship between this railroad and any existing German town. Breitenbach is a village that we once lived in, but it never had a train station! Rosenheim ist just a joke based on my last name. I still need a few more ideas to name the other stations...

I'll be modeling the 1960s to 1970s, the railroad I grew up with.

I was wondering...

if the German trains would make a comeback.

I always liked your last HO German layout, it's nice to see something different. Looking forward to seeing this one develop.

Along for the ride

Really enjoyed the first version of your German railroad, looking forward to seeing what you come up with for this one. Especially looking forward to seeing the laser cutter do its thing with all of those structures in the town.

That looks like an interesting track plan. I'd probably re-arrange the staging design so the access to the staging is from the layout room instead of outside.  German hobbyists will probably enjoy this build and be able to offer advice if they can find this website........DaveB

60's and 70's is popular for Germany for good reasons

Michael,

ah, makes sense with the town names. thank you.

This looks like a fun track plan and allows for a busy mainline with automated operations. Are you planning to automate operations on the branch line as well? Do you have a specific (proto-freelanced) locale in mind?

I very much enjoy the 1980's Deutsche Bundesbahn, no surprise it's the railroad I grew up with. However, the operational variety in the early 70's is much more interesting, so that's what I'm modeling. Freight that can be applied even on modestly sized layout. On local service DB used a wild mix of passenger rolling stock. Steam was still in daily action in some areas, too.

Time to scratch the other itch ...

Ah Michael, time to scratch the OTHER itch! Now that you're going to model in HO for a while, any part of that itch include things like sound in them thar locos? I would think LokSound would be a great choice, since their decoder sound library is full of German locos.

You'd be surprised

Michael doesn't really like sound equipped locos.  They get on his nerves.

Rosenheim?

It may be a play on your name, but it's also the nearest major city to Bad Aibling, where I was stationed for six months of my five years in Germany.

The other four and a half years were spent in the Augsburg area.

I'm hoping for a distinctly Bavarian flavor instead of a Baden-Württemberg one.

Since you're doing the 70s.... no ICE.
