I've noticed a small change in behavior the last couple of days.

I always read the forum by click on "recent posts."  Then, selecting "x new" for an older topic that has new replies.

When reading on the Windows 10 PC with the Chrome browser, this takes me directly to the first new reply.

When reading on an iPad or iPhone, iOS 9. and the Chrome browser, this takes me to the top of the first page that has a new reply.  Using Safari, "x new" takes me to the first new reply.

I just started noticing this behavior a couple of days ago.

I'm always at a loss to

I'm always at a loss to figure out the order of the posts on here. Most forums have a function that lets you see only new posts, or threads with new posts. The NMR recent post button shows threads, some of which are new and I have no interest in reading, and others that have new posts since I last visited. Some threads are newly created, others long existing but with new content added.

I wish we had a way to mark as read so the ones we haven't browsed through that are on subjects of no interest don't clutter the pages. It irks me that I can go 5-8 pages back in the forum and still find threads with the "new" label after them.

INteresting Posts

Peter, I have found a work around for that.

When I find a thread that interests me, I post something in it. Even if it is just a comment like "Interesting idea".

Then I can follow that thread by going to the "My Recent Posts" tab on the "Recent Posts" page.

Not sure I'd recommend that work around too highly

If you had 50 folks hit one thread with "interesting idea" you'd have a lot of junk to wade through to get to meaningful posts.  Multiply that by the number of threads that interest anyone, plus the number of such posts to highly popular threads, and...

I have to agree Mike. People

I have to agree Mike.

People read these forums to learn new things, and or share things with others. With limited time to spend on reading the forms latest discussions, it is very frustrating to see blank postings that are made for the sole convenience of the poster. Very selfish to the rest of us and our time. What is even worse are those that feel they have to reply to EVERY thread with their never ending drizzle, accolades, atta boy's  and all of the blah blah blah that happens to be on their mind at the time. For those people, get yourself a tweeter account and knock your self out. When I check on the recent postings, and see ten new replies, and then to see that they are all from the same guy.. blah blah blah. Almost makes me want to shoot myself!!!!

Not to say that it isn't  very pleasant to hear words of encouragement from the hobbyists who have shown and shared their fantastic modeling endeavors with the rest of us. That is good, and usually helpful in the confidence department as well. But posting for the sake of posting really irks me. I'm sure they mean well, but do not realize the pain and suffering the rest of us have to endure. It only waters down the great information that is on this forum and makes it more of an unpleasant place to hang out.

Just my thoughts.

I've noticed the same thing on my PC (Windows 8.1) and on my phone (iOS 9.2.1 (13D15)), both running Chrome.

Not here

I don't see that behavior here. Windows 10, Chrome. My Kindle Fire (Android) also brings up the first new post. Weird things...

It has always been that way..................

.............as far as I can remember.  The "new" posts are in blue ink (huh? I meant font color!) under the # of replies.  They continue to grow unless you click and read the new ones then for you it starts over.

Not always the way we're describing

For me, clicking on that "< count> new" link used to take you directly to the new posts.  Now, it just takes you to the top of the page containing those new posts, meaning you have to scroll down looking for the first posts marked "New".

For me Chrome on Windows 7

For me Chrome on Windows 7 and 10 works fine. It's only on the iPhone and iPad that I see the difference.

Now that I think about it, there was an upgrade to the Chrome app a few days ago. I didn't notice if that's when the different behavior started.

I'm using fire fox 44. on an Imac and it took me to the new posts, not the top of the page in this thread. I suspect it might have to do with different systems, or the newest post just happened to be at the top of a page possibly?

"New?"

When I click on recent posts I see them as latest post at top of page and any I haven't yet read have a red "new" label.  Seems like it's been the same for some time? .......DaveB

Two conversations at least

I see we have two conversations in the this thread one regarding how new posts work in general and one (the OP) having a problem getting to the new content of an existing thread on iDevices with Chrome.

So regarding the problem with Chrome on iDevices, since other browsers work on the iDevice and Chrome works correctly elsewhere it must be a problem with Chrome on the iDevice.  I would say check for an update, but I think you said Chrome updated on your iDevice recently. For those that Chrome works correctly on you iDevice post the version number of Chrome so the OP can compare to his version of Chrome.

I don't know the if Apple allows you to uninstall an update or not, but if it does I would try that to see if that solves the problem, then you would know for certain it is the latest update that is an issue.  A google search of chrome on iphone ignores anchor tags (that is what is used to get to the new content) does reveal this as a problem, but not recently, the results I got were from 2013/4 and some were safari not chrome.  You could test it with another forum, too, try this link and see if the first line is the text "This works great, when you want to display something interesting..."

http://blogging.nitecruzr.net/2006/10/putting-anchors-and-html-in-your-posts.html#HTMLTutorial

Now I have noticed that you have to wait till the browser finishes loading the page for it to jump to the anchor point sometimes, so maybe you are not waiting for the page to load complete.

Anchor tag failure - browser bug

According to our research, this problem is due to a bug in certain browsers - they fail to recognize the anchor tag. This tag is a very common tag used to do jumping into the middle of a web page, and if it fails, you end up on the top of the page, not down in the middle where you wanted to be.

The bowsers that apparently fail are:
Chrome browser on iOS (Apple mobile devices)
Safari browser on the iPhone (Safari on iPad works OK)
Internet Explorer 8 on the PC

If you don't like this behavior, then choose a different browser. The Firefox browser, for example, is now available for iOS and anchor tags work correctly.

Googling on this problem shows it's a known bug, and at least for Chrome and Safari, we can expect a fix eventually. Internet Explorer, on the other hand, went out of support in January 2016, so Microsoft will be issuing no more fixes (they want you to upgrade to Windows 10 and the new Edge browser).

In the meantime, since browsers are free, it's easy to use a different one that's less buggy.

Computer geek was my day job - I managed a team of geeks. Now MRH is all I do - but as you can see, it needs its fair share of geekiness, too.
