Here are a few photos of a recent project to weather a new Athearn Genesis CNW GP15-1 with DCC/sound for transfer service on the Meadow Sub.

I wanted a second unit for my Union Pacific transfer and settled on a Chicago and North Western GP15-1, which there were several still remaining in CNW paint in my 1998 era.  I especially like the brighter safety yellow scheme and found out that 4402 was still painted in that scheme.  Since I didn't need the extra power for my transfer, I purchased an Athearn Genesis GP15-1 with DCC/sound, programmed it, and then gutted the drive and sold it.  The UP GP38-2 and GP15-1 sound pretty nice together and now they look decent, too!

More Photos

For weathering, I started out by fading the paint a little, especially the yellow.  This locomotive was rustier and dirtier than my other diesels and I was a little hesitant to add so much weathering, but I wanted to stay true to the prototype.  So next I added some grimy wash and rust wash, then I added some dirt-colored and soot-colored pastels, and lastly I added some rust-colored oils to the areas that had a lot of rust.

Here is a photo of the prototype from rrpicturearchives.net:

And more photos of the model:

Looks great

That looks great Eric!  Nice job on the weathering.

By the way, is it just me, or does it seem as though the rear of the unit is riding a bit higher than the front, like it's not seated all the way down on the frame?  It seems especially prominent in the broadside view of the right side above, if you compare the height of the second step from the bottom relative to the brake cylinders, with the height of similar details on the front.

Nice model and nice paint

Nice model and nice paint job. I remember seeing my first one of these a long time ago and thinking a gp tunnel motor? The next day I saw it dead in tow with a batch of smoky looking oil around the area where the prime mover is. I thought wow that did not last long.

Thanks!

Thanks, Joe and Rob.  Joe, you are correct about the rear of the unit!  I was in such a hurry to get it put back together, that I did not check that the trucks were secured to the frame, so I will go back and do that...

Have a soft spot the GP15

So your loco is now a big speaker enclosure? Looks good what ever is under the hood. I might be forced to try and find a CNW version, I can see a search for a patchout CNW livery starting, there was a useful paper back out a few years ago which covered all the original GP15 variants and buyers, my copy is out on loan at present so I can't remember the publisher.

Dummy unit

Yep, it's just a speaker enclosure! The transfer only needs the power of one locomotive, so the other can be a dummy.  And sometimes I will run the transfer with just the powered unit.  I agree, GP15s are cool!  I had been trying to figure out a way to add one to my roster for years...

Nice work

The figure on the front deck in the opening photo adds a great deal, and looks much better than most out-of-the-box figures. Can you tell us more?
