What a great idea!

A laser cut switch machine kit, what a great idea!

Well Tim Warris I suspect that great

Well Tim Warris I suspect that great minds think alike. I will add that your turnout jigs produced a yard full of quality turnouts that can be seen in action on my video page. The videos in question are called 105 reasons to add weight to your freight cars and I back trains of over 100 cars through turnouts built with your jigs and switch them with only track magnets...no touching.

Servo Option?

Bill,

This looks fantastic!  Any chance you could design one that a 9G servo could be placed instead of the manual push arm?

I'd be very interested in those!

Thanks,

Ryan

Servo Option...

I'm not really about reinventing the wheel, although Tim may have implied it.

Tim Warris makes the BullFrog, a very nice Manual Control.

The main reason I created the Simple Switch Machine is because I needed a low profile solution, which the bullfrog is not. At least, not that I saw.

For servos, Berret Hill makes a very nice looking servo mount.

What is it about the Simple Switch Machine that inspires you to ask for a servo driven version?

Sidewinder

We introduced these in 2012.  Low profile mount for the Bullfrog Switch Machine...

Requires 1 1/8" clearance and still provides the springing action needed to hold points closed regardless of the travel in the turnout.

ok.

Looks too complicated, and $14 per turnout, plus shipping.

The Simple Switch Machine is $6.50 US with free shipping.
Add $1 if you include the Slide switch.

Re: Servo Option...

Bill,

I've seen the Berret Hill option and I'm going to give it a try as well.  I'd prefer a low profile similar to what you have designed.  I'm guessing I'm not a lonely voice in the woods.  Maybe you could do a poll to see how much demand there is for this.  I'd buy 20 right off the bat, and probably another 20 again after that.

Thanks for entertaining the idea.

This looks like a good deal,

This looks like a good deal, Bill.

A couple of questions:

1.Is the assembly pretty simple, it looks like it?

2.Would it work okay with using flexible cable (model airplane) to be able to handle curved, operating, linkage rather than a straight push rod?

Thanks,

Barry

Bill and Tim I like both of

Bill and Tim I like both of your controls for many of the same reasons, compact manual control that can be used for hard to reach areas. I also like surface mount ground throws for some of the same reasons and can think of places where all of them are good choices as well as the tortoise machine. I think both of you should be commended for providing fine products and good alternatives to what is out there.

@ Ryan, I've sent you an email.

@ Barry, assembly is very easy. The piano wire will also do a curved linkage, but not as tight as you could do with some of the aircraft linkages. A sleeved aircraft linkage cable would work just as well.

Example of a curved linkage using piano wire, without a cable housing:

Looks good

Looks good, Bill. Price is attractive, as well. I was thinking about Blue Points for my new layout since I could wire it to power the frog, but I'm sure I can make use of your product in the future.

Low Profile Controls

For very low profile controls check the controls by Humpyard Purveyance. Simple and effective and come with all you need to operate.

wire it to power the frog

In case it was missed: the Simple Switch Machine does include an option to power the frog also.

Options......

Bill, nice looking switch machine! Glad to see another option in the hardware line up.   I'm not necessarily brand specific, and since I don't have a local hobby shop near by, it's internet surfing to find what I need, which is my point, when I find the item that works for me, that's what I get, doesn't matter who made it...........

Can you use other slide

Can you use other slide switches than the one you offer? I don't need DPDT. Is it N scale friendly or will the throw length be too long!

Reply 0
Bill Brillinger

Can you?

If you send me the switch you want to use, I can customize the Switch Machine to accept it.

Throw length is determined by the slide switch. The dpdt's I provide have 3mm travel.

If you are using sprung turnouts, then the throw is limited by the turnout spring, and the slide switch is not needed.

I have been using the slide switch for years

I have been using the slide switch for years to throw my turnouts, not as fancy as yours, but after 20+ years it still works.
