Well I've been working on my livery of dead rail steam engines and Den (Morenci Southern) kind of prodded me to install a decoder and batteries in a Porter. Just looking at it seemed impossible so, of course, I had to try.

Taking it apart involved some head scratching and eventually so dove in. It seems as though the whistle and a steam dome are lost among the sh$zza on my desk but below are some pictures of the progress.

Thanks for looking and I always enjoy comments. Good, bad, or ugly. Must have thick skin ...

P.S. Bill! I looked all over for those decals and really want to letter these engines.  Could we do another batch??

You can see that this test fit seems to be ok. The wires from the motor (visible in the cab) are too short but nothing is crewed back together so will get soldered before too long.

Formerly owned by the Colorado Mining Company the #1 will be re-numbered and lettered for the Umauma Plantation Railway or after the owner's daughter "Marie". The current #1 is an old Forney so this may become the 42 based on current management practice of using the wheelbase for convenience. You can guess that the brass will want the Forney to be re-numbered 44 and named after another family member (probably Curtis).  The backshop crew does what it takes to make the new owners happy but have an alternate name behind their back for the UR&N.

That's all for today. Another beer is calling.

Thanks for looking.

It lives!

I should mention that I am using an NCE dead rail receiver/decoder with (3) 3.7v Li-po batteries and a CVP T5000 throttle. No other equipment or wiring is necessary.

Battery Source

What's your source for the batteries?

Batteries

- Thanks Rob in Texas and Bill in Canada!

Ralphie79wi - my batteries are from an eBay source out of China. To buy batteries made in the US impossible. The only difference is quality control. If any of those sent to me don't work then I'll toss them. At $2.50 each it isn't much of a loss. So far, by charging them correctly, and buying ones with temperature control I have had great luck. My soldering skills are improving but not ready for surface mounted components (yet).

Engines with tenders are so much easier to install and add sound. I am now anxiously awaiting some add-on boards from BlueRail Trains (Dave Reese). This will not make the install any easier but allow anyone with a smart phone the chance to run an engine without having to buy more throttles!

Devices for posting

My iPhone 6s has a 12 megapixel camera so is my go-to device for taking photos and making quick videos. The iPad or MacBook are always nearby but we don't have internet at home so I rely on a hotspot. This make sharing pictures and videos among devices harder.

Today at work (PC) I messed around with YouTube and can see how one would copy the links but not sure how to embed in the blog. It is nice to share with family and friends in one spot so MRH has been my preference.

Thanks for your help!

How to Embed...

Here's how to embed video on MRH with a PC. I'm not sure what it looks like from an ipad or iphone.

The code on youtube for embedding is located here:
