SJVRR

Hello all,

I have converted a O scale Lionel 3RL dummy Alco S-2 locomotive into a 2 rail powered model.

Now I want to make the details.

I wonder about the interior of the cab.

Is anyone has photos of the interior please?

Here in France it's not possible to find one and to photograph it...

Thank you very much for your help.

Jack, please show us some

Jack, please show us some pics of your S2 and of the cab interior you are building. An Alco switcher is high on the list of the engines I want to have, so I am very interested how your Lionel S2 will turn out. If I can find enough pics and information I am considering to scratchbuild an Alco S6 but a Lionel dummy like yours might be a good alternative.

Here is my S-2

Ok, this is my S-2. It's far to be completed but you can see the general looking.

The cab isn't installed. Before to click it on the chassis, I have to finish the interior.

The S-6 is a nice model to scratchbuild.

I save a lot of time to use a Lionel dummy base. This model is really superb and the body is well detailed.

I used Atlas trucks as you advice me. I keep the Lionel Blunt trucks sides and adapt them on the Atlas trucks.

I made electricity pick-ups on the trucks and install a motor which come from a printer drawer.

The consumption is very low near 100 mA in load.

I'll post photos of the interior when ready. I have to scratchbuild it.

Thank you for posting the

Thank you for posting the pictures. The Lionel S2 is looking really good and definitely a very good starting point for a very nice 2-rail engine. Looking forward to seeing it finished.

Jack, why was she...............

...........making that God awful noise with the body on the chassis when it was dead silent without it?  Something rubbing or touching that shouldn't be?  Love the Blunt Truck side frames on the Atlas trucks.

The noise, the running

Peter,

the noise is due to my controller (HF system) and is amplified by the fact the camera has a very powerful microphone.

We can listen to the noise of the lens too. That's funny!

In reality, the noise is really less than on the video.

The Alco has a great running, very smooth and powerful. That's my best loved locomotive.
...and I love Alcos.

I love the Blunt trucks, I was ought to choose to adapt the Lionel ones.

@Jack...........

You lost me a bit.  "the noise is due to my controller (HF system)".  What does HF mean, high frequency?  What type of controller are you using?  I noticed some funny noises without the cab but thought they were either background or some sort of camera noise.  Also, I thought you were using DCC from past correspondence.

Hope to post a video of my Whitcomb with QSI sound soon.

Very Nice

Jack, that is so cool !!!  Very motivating. As per Peter request, please expound a little more on the HF System.

To Peter: Looking forward ion hearing your Whitcomb with the QSI in it.I too have a QSI Sound on my Atlas O scale SW 8/9 and I really like it.

HF

Sorry Peter. HF for High Frequency.

I have 3 amps DC KFS with feedback controllers from Kent Panel Controls (KPC).

I had choose the reinforced components for intensive use (for exhibitions for example).

It's an English device which runs perfectly with any kind of motors (bad or good). You can choose 2 possible kinds of frequencies depending of the reaction of the motors.

Unfortunately, KPC doesn't exist now. The company has closed.

One day, I hope to use DCC+sound. If I want to install sound in all my locomotives I need a lot of money...

I'm waiting for your video.

I have finally finished re-doing...........

......what we call "The Little Camp", so I will post videos tomorrow.  It is a basic building 11 x 12 feet that I finished in knotty pine in 1970 (I think)  I got married in 1972 and my wife and I stayed out there while my parents stayed in the "Big Camp" (25X28!) down by the water. The man who built it lived in the little camp while he was building the big camp.  As time went by it turned into more of a storage shed.  Now being retired I live here all summer with my fiancee who still works on-line (DSL finally arrived) as graphic designer.  We both could use a place for our hobbies (she's an artist) so I painted over the knotty pine with white semi gloss and repainted the ceilings.  It is soooo much brighter in there now but it did hurt painting over all that knotty pine.  So now I have a summer workshop that isn't the dining room table or TV tray!

No Need.......................

No need to add sound Jack!  Sounds good to me as is.  That is what I always liked about the old Athearn locomotives is that they all had a built in sound system!

Yes Nelson

Hi Nelson,

yes you're right about motor sounds.

I can live with this sound, no problem. The quality of running is more important than sound for me.

Nick and Jack, my OMI O scale Whitcomb.........

...... with QSI Stereo sound, from startup (note the separate motors) to shutdown.  As my test track is short I disengaged the drive to rev 'er up!  Those two motors do make a racket!!

I have a 20 x 21 foot layout "in progress"...........

O standard as well as On30 (not yet started to lay the track)  All handlaid code 100 with number 4.5 and 6 turnouts using Fast Tracks jigs.  Here are a couple of short Videos:

So Neat

Peter that is great !  I love it. My 44 Tonner is having issues going through the frogs (Fastrack) even with the frog juicer. So I was thinking of putting a WoW decoder inside my 44 Tonner. Right now I have a MRC Decoder in my 44 Tonner. My SW runs great and with the QSI decoder runs even better. I really like the sound of the QSI ad all the features that it have.

Again thank you so much for posting the video.

@Nick.......

If you would take a photo of the bottom of your 44 tonner showing the side frames and wheels, I'll show you how to make proper wipers for all 8 wheels and that should solve the problem w/o the need/expense for a CurrentKeeper, or Keep Alive.  Changing decoders without fixing the power pick up issues will not help.  I only found the need for one on my GE 23 Ton Boxcab (Lee Snover made) which has only 4 wheels and a really short wheelbase.

See below:

http://

You can see it runs for about 3-4 seconds after it went "on the ground"!  Operator error as I accidentally hit recall button instead of the down speed button and that changed loco number so I had no control over it.  Oops!

To make wipers for a O scale

To make wipers for a O scale locomotive is easy to make. Nick: you can do them my friend!

On my Atlas 3RL converted to 2 RL trucks:

2_jm_038.jpg

The wipers are from coper soldered onto a small piece of circuit board with a smooth wire.

The circuit board is glued (Loctite 401) onto the side of the truck.

2_jm_051.jpg

I hope it helps...

And you need for cleanded wheels. The blackener can provide troubles of electricity conductivity. I know this with my Rich Yoder GE44: Chinese quality metal... I need to clean the wheels from time to time.

A solution is to replace these bad quality wheels by nickel silver ones. Hard to find... So we have to clean our wheels.

Thanks to you!

Thanks to you I could make the interior cab details of my Alco. I've simplified but I think it's enough when the roof is installed.

The model, not yet finished at this time, but I'm happy to show you.
