Day 3... I've rediscovered that nobody comes to a convention in order to get enough sleep.

Silent Auction is fully up and running after a rough (computer generated) start. Lots of items there, and happily it appears that most of my items now have bids on them. I've got a few out as well... the question being, will I make more than I spend?

Back in the Celebration (nee' Contest) Room, some new items have shown up, including a "Battery Powered Train" in the Thumbs section -

3548_mrh.jpg

And it works, too:

Now I showed off some photos of an amusement park layout, with Z scale equipment operating as a riding-train. It scales out to about 18" gauge, but it's the closest thing that's reliable. Here is a video of it running -

Who knew that Portland was a hotbed of the arms trade? Like the Frijolene Tank Car from yesterday, also a Thumbs item -

Wow, the celebration room is filling up nicely!

Jeff, thanks so much for doing this.  I wish I could be there, but it just wasn't in the cards this year.  Rene'

Tuesday continued again....

What I think really surprised me was how scales other than HO, and particularly the narrow gauges, were represented for evaluation far in excess of their relative percentages in the modeling population. Some of this is undoubitably because, in other scales and particularly other gauges, if you don't make it yourself, it doesn't exist.

This model is the HO scale Kinzua Valley stock pen (Soo Line) under repairs -

And that was it for Tuesday at the NMRA National Convention, Daylight Express 2015. Tomorrow I become the interim Clinic Coordinator, as Charlie Comstock prepares to display and operate the Bear Creek & South Jackson to and with a great many people over the next two days. It's midnight. Time to go to bed.

Dr Geoff : in full flight...

Dear Jeff,

Thanks for catching Dr Geoff in full flight...
anyone know if any Audio Editing apps flexed their muscle during the clinic?

Minor gotcha, the "SW1500" is actually a SW7/9/1200
(Long story, revolving around Athearn jumping the gun on EMD switcher model numbers many years ago IIRC...)

Those DCC uncouplers, without excess mechanicals or "stuff" running afoul of the trucks/mechs,
and still permitting magnetic operation if desired, very interesting!

Happy Modelling,

Prof Klyzlr

Dioramas

The dioramas are phenominal to me.  Some of the best modeling I've seen.  Really likes the mining one though Manassas was spectacular.  Thanks Jeff for the great photos!

Geoff Bunza's clinics

Prof,

I don't know what went on in his clinics, as I was not able to stay for any of them. Hopefully he'll chime in -

I'll bet lights were going on

I'll bet lights were going on and off in very creative ways, and his model televisions were likely something that just stunned everyone. He is truly a very talented individual that is both skilled and creative. We are fortunate to see his work and to have him share it with us.

Celebration Room

Am I correct in assuming the "Celebration Room" is for displaying models and not entering them in contests? Forgive me if this has been discussed...

Expanding on photos of Portland Traction

Jeff’s photo of the Portland Traction Company’s SW1 #100 reminded me of two super excellent videos shot of the prototype engine working. The videos are very entertaining because they show a lot of operational footage with the conductor working on the ground and cab footage as well.

Contest --> Celebration Room

Dear Greg,

My understanding is that for the first day or so of the Convention,
the room is officially known as the "Contest Room",
where models-for-judging and models-for-display are located, and model-contest judging is in-effect.

Post official-judging and awards announcement, the room is recast/renamed into the "Celebration Room",
where display models can be appreciated without the stigma of "not being part of the modelling competition",
and those placegetters in the modelling-contest can proudly display their plaques/awards as acknowledgement that "this dun good"...
(IE it's now time to "celebrate the modelling" rather than "chasing the contest win").

Same room, same models,
different day with a different attitude...

Happy Modelling,
Aim to Improve,
Prof Klyzlr

Celebration room

I may incorrect in my basic assumptions here, but as I understand it, words like "Contest," "Competition," and "Judging" were considered to be less than welcoming, so it's now "Celebration" (as in "Celebration of Model Railroading") and "Evaluation." Part of it is also that many of the models submitted are not there for judging or to compete against each other, but simply to be enjoyed.

@Prof Klyzlr re: Audio Editing

Hi Prof,

Quote:

No "real time" editing but, yes, WavePad was featured in an example cutting, pasting, normalizing, and applying pitch changes, in a sound project. You'll have to wait until I post the resultant project... or come to the Modeling with Sound Clinic Thursday evening at 8:30!

But come early, the animation clinics have been a bit crowded.

Have fun!

Best regards,

Geoff

@Rob re:lights were going on

Hi Rob,

Thanks for such high praise!   Indeed, lights were flashing and Harry's TV was open for business! There were new surprises for the audience in all the clinics that I hope to write up in more detail and pass them on, so others can build some for their own modeling world!  Coming soon!... (After I recover from 8 clinics and a week of  convention).

Have fun!

Best regards,

Geoff Bunza

I can imagine how hard you

I can imagine how hard you have worked to put the clinic on, not just to prepare all of your work but to field and answer the questions during and following your presentations. Thanks for sharing so much of your work with us.

@Battle Of manassas

It was also in a recent Model Railroader Magazine quite an impressive piece, and as always thanks for all the photos it really makes me feel like I am there!
