I just found this photo: http://railpictures.net/photo/520789 I'm just posting the link out of respect for the photo copyright.  But, this is a nice tunnel portal in a downtown, and a good way to disguise a loop if you have minimal space.  Mountains steep enough to justify a tunnel can be hard to make look convincing on a small layout--this could be plausible in a very small spot.

There's also one in Santa Cruz Ca. at the north end of Chestnut street that looks a lot like a model railroad tunnel as it heads into a very small "mountain"  (actually just goes thru a protrusion in an old river bank that has too much city adjacent to let the railroad go around ) ....DaveB

Reminds me of an old MR layout.

It kind of reminds me of the Carbondale Central (?).  I think that what it was called.  Yes, this would work in an industrial type layout.  Got any plans Irish?

That could be real

That could be real interesting with an icy road and a train coming out of that tunnel.

Anderson SC

Anderson SC has a very interesting arrangement as the former Blue Ridge/Southern went under the center of town. Now owned by Pickens Railroad.

Here's a shot in Chicago (not my pic) showing a train disappearing under the Sun Times building.   It reemerges a couple of blocks east.

CN North Vancouver BC

Not the greatest quality photo, but here's a CN crew returning from a (back then) BC Rail transfer in North Vancouver.  What you can't see is the street behind the tunnel portal - road level is about even with the top left corner of the portal.  North Van slopes up from the waterfront (off to the left), and the track loops under the hill, reappearing maybe 4-5 blocks to the west.  At the west end the track exits under an office building next to a bus loop, crosses a road, then passes under a patio attached to (I think - a while since I've been there) what used to be the BC Rail building.

 Google maps Street View has

Google Maps Street View has a good shot of the same location in Bellows Falls. It is from the middle of the street with no train so you get a good view of the tunnel portal and retaining walls.  You can see the light at the other end also.  From the aerial view, the other end of the tunnel looks to be similar.   It is a more rural looking setting with trees and bushes over the top. Unfortunately not where it can be seen from any streets.

The Bellows Falls and Anderson NC pics are great! Either one of those scenes would make a great model.

Brockville Railway Tunnel

One of my favourte "model railroad" tunnels in the real world is the Brockville railway tunnel - the first railway tunnel constructed in Canada (completed in 1860). There was some controversy when plans for the tunnel were first announced, as it was pointed out that there were far less expensive routes to get the tracks to the waterfront. (And in fact eventually a competing railway did just that). But the railroad builders of the time ((like many modelers) felt that no self-respecting railway was complete without a tunnel and with the aid of taxpayers, the tunnel was built.

Fortunately, it seems taxpayers are willing once again to cough up the funds needed to fully restore the tunnel end to end as a tourist attraction.

And yes, that's a street crossing directly above the tunnel entrance.

Two Pictures of Bellows Falls Tunnel

Here's a view of the southern portal of the tunnel. Seen the south side personally. It was pictured in Model Railroader back in the, IIRC, 70's. It was under "There is a prototype of everything".
