sea-rail

Just a thought.  Has anybody considered or actually painted their fascia similar to the backdrop for that particular layout ( meaning grass tufts/ bushes/ trees etc..)?  There is the mainstream suggestion to paint it an earth-tone color that compliments the area modeled or flat black to make the aisle disappear which then makes the scenicked part of the layout "pop".  That is all fine but when viewing low angle photos of layouts the solid earth tone fascia or strip of black across the aisle is very noticeable.  I don't have a layout big enough for aisles but wonder if this idea would look odd or enhance the finished layout. I will now proceed to research this. Just a thought.

Best effect for photos...

The best effect I've seen on fascias for photos is when the landscaping spills over the fascia.

Scenery over the fascia

I've had one short segment so far where I was able to have the scenery spill over the lip of the fascia.  Sea-rail, is this the kind of thing you're talking about?

Before I did this, Tom Johnson made good use of this effect all over his layout.  I think his work looks beautiful, and nicely helps to soften the edge of the layout for photography.

Example from Greeley Freight Station Museum

I took this shot of their "fascia", in the middle of the scene, painted like a backdrop.  Interesting idea to get separation between two levels where there was not room for 3D scenery.  So if they would have painted the front of the scene the same way, it would have been seamless, as if the bottom of the fascia continues on into some deep valley.

Rock Wrap Around

Hi SeaRail,

Yes, I've applied scenery to the fascia.  I wrapped the rock castings and foliage over the 'edge of the world' one to four inches.

It made it much easier to take photos and added realism to the cuts, ravines and river gorges.

Scenery Spillover

Tom Johnson makes liberal use of having foliage spill over the fascia edge.  Having seen it firsthand, it gives a whole new depth to the overall viewing pleasure of his 3D art.
